  1. A map of Garreg Mach lies open on the desk. I was expecting a quiet afternoon. That rarely lasts here. There’s a training session to plan, and I could use a second opinion. Would you start with the students who need confidence, or the ones who think they need no help?

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Bylethベレト/ベレス

Player-selected male or female protagonist; former mercenary and professor at the Officers Academy

Byleth is the player-controlled protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, a tactical role-playing game set in Fódlan. Players choose a male or female Byleth, a reserved mercenary who has spent years fighting alongside their father, Jeralt. After defending three academy students from bandits, Byleth is unexpectedly appointed professor at the Officers Academy in Garreg Mach Monastery.

Their skill with a sword earns the students’ attention; their unfamiliarity with ordinary school life makes the appointment less straightforward. As they guide one of the academy’s three houses, Byleth also encounters a mysterious girl called Sothis, who speaks to them alone. The house the player chooses determines the direction of Byleth’s later story.

Biography

A Mercenary Raised by Jeralt

Byleth grows up traveling across Fódlan with the mercenary band led by their father, Jeralt, a former captain of the Knights of Seiros. They learn the practical demands of battle long before entering a classroom. Their skill and unnervingly calm expression earn them a reputation among fellow mercenaries as the “Ashen Demon”—a name that reveals more about how others see Byleth than about how they will act as a teacher.

From a Bandit Encounter to Garreg Mach

Byleth and Jeralt intervene when Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude—the leaders of the three student houses—are threatened by bandits. The encounter draws the attention of the Church of Seiros, and Byleth receives an unexpected offer to become a professor at the Officers Academy within Garreg Mach Monastery. Despite Byleth’s unconventional background, Archbishop Rhea approves the appointment.

The Three Houses

As professor, Byleth chooses to instruct the Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer. Under their supervision, students attend lessons, improve their skills, undertake assignments, and face increasingly dangerous field missions. Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude each lead a different house, but none of the three choices is a universal, fixed canon for Byleth.

An Unusual Guide

A mysterious girl called Sothis appears in Byleth’s dreams and speaks to them privately. Through their connection, Byleth gains the ability to turn back a brief span of time. Later, Byleth’s ability to wield the Sword of the Creator draws particular attention from the Church and scholars of Crests. These strange events complicate an otherwise practical mercenary’s introduction to monastery life.

Learning to Be a Teacher

At Garreg Mach, Byleth begins doing things that no mercenary contract prepared them for: arranging lessons, listening to students, and dividing time between assignments and the monastery’s ordinary routines. Meals, fishing, gardening, and training sessions offer chances to get to know people beyond the battlefield. Students who arrive with different ambitions and fears may become allies, but their futures depend on the path Byleth leads them down.

Personality and Motivations

Byleth speaks little and rarely shows strong emotion on their face. That reserve shapes their reputation as a mercenary and can make them difficult to read at the academy. Yet their quietness does not mean that their actions are indifferent: they take on the responsibility of guiding and protecting students even when teaching is unfamiliar territory.

Byleth tends to listen and act rather than fill a conversation with speeches. As professor, they help students with different strengths, fears, and loyalties, while the player’s dialogue selections leave room for variations in humor, warmth, and decisiveness. Byleth’s decisions can also change the fate of entire factions; a single fixed political ideology would misrepresent the game’s branching story.

Their approach to battle is measured: notice the immediate danger, make a judgment, and commit to action. This is different from the conspicuous pride of some students or the elaborate plans of others. Byleth can be stern, unexpectedly dry, or quietly supportive without becoming a constantly talkative mentor.

Appearance

Three Houses offers distinct male and female visual designs for Byleth. In their original academy-era appearances, both have dark blue-green hair, blue eyes, and dark outfits built around a black cloak and martial details. The male design uses a high-collared tunic and fitted dark armor; the female design has longer hair, a more open upper garment, patterned leggings, and armored elements. Both are recognizable as the same protagonist in different selectable forms.

The Sword of the Creator, with its ornate guard and unusual segmented blade, is the weapon most strongly associated with Byleth. Their dark clothing and guarded expression suit the former mercenary even after they become a professor. A major later change in their appearance is explained behind the spoiler boundary.

Abilities

Swordsmanship

Byleth is an accomplished mercenary swordsman whose combat judgment impresses the Officers Academy’s students and colleagues.

Sword of the Creator

Byleth can use the Sword of the Creator, a legendary Heroes’ Relic that others cannot simply wield to the same effect.

Divine Pulse

Through the power of Sothis, Byleth can rewind a short stretch of time to reconsider choices. In battle, this appears as the Divine Pulse mechanic.

Limitations: Divine Pulse has a limited number of uses per battle and does not guarantee that every scripted story tragedy can be averted.

Teaching and Tactical Leadership

Byleth tutors students, sets learning goals, arranges class assignments, and commands units during tactical engagements at the Officers Academy.

Crest of Flames

Byleth bears the Crest of Flames, which helps explain their unusual ability to draw power from the Sword of the Creator.

Professor’s Guidance

Byleth’s personal ability increases experience gained by Byleth and adjacent allies in battle by a factor of 1.2.

Limitations: The bonus applies to Byleth and allies positioned directly beside them, not to every unit on the map.

Relationships

Jeralt

Father and mercenary-company leader

Jeralt raises Byleth while traveling Fódlan and is their first major example of life as a professional fighter. He previously led the Knights of Seiros.

Sothis

Mysterious voice and supernatural companion

Sothis appears in Byleth’s dreams and communicates with them privately, offering observations and strange assistance.

Rhea

Archbishop and academy patron

Rhea leads the Church of Seiros and authorizes Byleth’s appointment at Garreg Mach, though she knows more about their circumstances than she initially explains.

Edelgard

Black Eagles house leader; possible student

The Adrestian imperial heir is one of the students Byleth may teach. Her ambitions become particularly important if the Black Eagles are chosen.

Dimitri

Blue Lions house leader; possible student

The heir to Faerghus leads the Blue Lions and may become Byleth’s principal student and ally, depending on the selected house.

Claude

Golden Deer house leader; possible student

Claude leads the Golden Deer; if Byleth teaches his house, their work together grows out of his curiosity and tactical outlook.

Hanneman

Fellow professor and Crest researcher

Hanneman investigates Crests and shows a keen interest in the unusual circumstances surrounding Byleth.

Interesting facts

The Japanese character listing names male Byleth ベレト (Bereto) and female Byleth ベレス (Beresu), while both versions use Byleth in the official English presentation.

The two Japanese names distinguish the selectable designs; they are not evidence of two simultaneous protagonists in a single playthrough.

In support dialogue, Byleth can admit not knowing their own age, and Hanneman finds gaps and inconsistencies in what is known about Jeralt’s past.

The mystery is part of the early characterization, so presenting an exact age without the necessary context can be misleading.

Byleth’s personal ability, Professor’s Guidance, grants 20% more experience to Byleth and directly adjacent allies.

The game expresses Byleth’s teaching role through a practical battlefield benefit rather than leaving it entirely in dialogue.

When Byleth is female, Sylvain can be recruited from the Blue Lions into another house without meeting his usual stat and skill requirements.

This is a concrete gameplay difference between the male and female selections even though both share the central protagonist role.

Major story spoilers below.

The Hidden Story of Byleth’s Birth

Sitri, Byleth’s mother, was the twelfth artificial vessel created in Rhea’s effort to revive the progenitor god Sothis. She carried the Crest Stone associated with Sothis in place of an ordinary heart. When Byleth was born in grave danger and Sitri was dying, Sitri asked Rhea to give that heart to her child. Rhea placed the Crest Stone in Byleth, saving the infant but leaving them with an extraordinary connection to Sothis. The revelation is especially personal because Jeralt had taken Byleth away from the monastery without knowing the full circumstances.

Jeralt’s Secrecy and the Cost of the Monastery

Jeralt had left Garreg Mach after Sitri’s death, suspicious of what had happened to their child. When Byleth returns with him to the monastery, his unease persists. During the academy year he is murdered by the infiltrator known as Monica, later revealed to be Kronya. Byleth attempts to undo the attack, but the intervention of another enemy prevents Jeralt’s rescue. The loss strikes directly at the bond that had defined Byleth’s life before the academy.

Sothis, Solon, and the Fusion

When Byleth is trapped in a seemingly inescapable void by Solon, Sothis reveals more of her divine identity and merges her power with Byleth so that they can escape. Byleth’s hair changes from its earlier dark shade to pale green, and their bond with Sothis enters a different state. This is a pivotal transformation rather than a cosmetic variant to be placed in the public character introduction.

The Holy Tomb and the Choice of Allegiance

In the Holy Tomb, Byleth learns that Edelgard is the Flame Emperor. Her forces attempt to seize Crest Stones, bringing the conflict with Rhea and the Church into the open. Byleth’s allegiance thereafter depends on the house chosen and, within the Black Eagles, a crucial decision about whether to support Edelgard or defend the Church. The resulting branches cannot all be interpreted as one sequence of events.

Five Years Away

After war reaches Garreg Mach, Byleth disappears for five years. They return to a continent divided by conflict and reunite with former students or Church allies according to the chosen route. The reunion is no simple return to teaching: the people Byleth once instructed must now decide where they stand in a war, and Byleth must command them through it.

Crimson Flower: Supporting Edelgard

On the Crimson Flower path, Byleth sides with Edelgard against Rhea’s Church and helps lead the campaign that culminates in the assault on Fhirdiad. Rhea becomes the final battlefield opponent in her Immaculate One form. After the final confrontation, Byleth loses the power of the progenitor god and regains a mortal heartbeat; the struggle against those who slither in the dark remains part of the route’s subsequent history. Individual paired epilogues alter Byleth’s precise later occupation and relationships.

Azure Moon: Guiding Dimitri

In Azure Moon, Byleth reunites with Dimitri and supports the Kingdom’s fight against the Empire. They help him confront his destructive grief and return his attention to the living people who depend on him. In the unpaired Byleth ending, Rhea steps down and Byleth succeeds her as archbishop, guiding the Church of Seiros while Dimitri rules the reunited Fódlan under Faerghus.

Verdant Wind: Claude and the Truth of Fódlan

With Claude, Byleth pushes beyond the immediate struggle between the three powers to uncover more of the continent’s hidden history, including Rhea’s account of the Nabateans and Nemesis. The route culminates in a confrontation with the resurrected Nemesis. In Byleth’s unpaired ending, Claude departs Fódlan and Byleth becomes the first ruler of the United Kingdom of Fódlan; the details of some paired endings vary.

Silver Snow: The Church’s Path

If Byleth teaches the Black Eagles but refuses to join Edelgard, they lead a resistance aligned with the Church rather than the Empire. The route brings them into conflict with those who slither in the dark and ultimately with Rhea after she loses control of her Immaculate One form. Whether Rhea survives depends on support-related conditions; Byleth’s base ending places them at the head of the United Kingdom of Fódlan.

No Single Fixed Romance or Postwar Life

Three Houses uses route-dependent and support-dependent epilogues. Byleth may marry or otherwise share a specific ending with different characters, or receive an unpaired ending, and some possible partners depend on the selected version of Byleth. These optional pairings are alternatives, not relationships that all occur in a single canonical future.

Cindered Shadows: The Secret in Abyss

The optional Cindered Shadows side story takes Byleth beneath Garreg Mach into Abyss, where the Ashen Wolves become involved in a plot concerning Sitri. At its conclusion, Rhea acknowledges having arranged a false burial and secretly keeping Sitri’s body in Abyss. She explains that Sitri asked for the heart in her chest to be passed to the newborn Byleth. This side story adds painful detail to Byleth’s origins, but it does not provide a fifth mutually exclusive ending to the main war.

Additional story facts

In the optional Crimson Flower ending shared by Byleth and Jeritza, they fight those who slither in the dark and then vanish from public records.

This paired epilogue provides a deliberately elusive future very different from the public office Byleth may hold on other routes.

A possible Silver Snow epilogue pairs Byleth with Rhea: she survives, returns as archbishop, and works alongside Byleth as ruler.

That outcome must be distinguished from Rhea’s fate without the required support and from the baseline role Byleth inherits on the Church route.

In the Byleth-and-Claude ending available to female Byleth, Claude returns from Almyra with an army to help defend the new United Kingdom of Fódlan.

The alliance extends their cooperation beyond the campaign’s final battle, but only in this particular paired epilogue.

In the Byleth-and-Dedue Azure Moon ending, the pair eventually retire to the Duscur Peninsula and spend their later years gardening.

The quiet destination contrasts with their years of war and church or royal responsibility, without implying it happens in every playthrough.

Spoiler questions

Who is Byleth’s mother?

Sitri, whose life and connection to Rhea’s experiments are clarified in the Cindered Shadows account of Byleth’s birth.

Why does Byleth have no ordinary heartbeat?

Their life is sustained by a Crest Stone placed in their chest after childbirth endangered them and Sitri. The origin of that stone is tied to Sothis.

Why does Byleth’s hair turn green?

Sothis merges her power with Byleth to help them escape Solon’s trap, producing the dramatic change in appearance.

Who is the Flame Emperor?

Edelgard; the revelation occurs at the Holy Tomb and is a central turning point in the game.

Does Byleth always side with Edelgard?

No. Supporting Edelgard is the Crimson Flower option within the Black Eagles path; the other routes place Byleth with a different faction.

Does Byleth die in Fire Emblem: Three Houses?

Byleth survives the main route conclusions represented in the game’s ending texts, but their final responsibilities and bodily condition differ by path and paired ending.

Does Byleth become archbishop or ruler?

In the unpaired Azure Moon ending Byleth becomes archbishop; in Silver Snow and Verdant Wind unpaired endings they lead the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Crimson Flower has a different future.

Who does Byleth marry?

There is no single fixed spouse. Romantic or paired outcomes depend on the route, Byleth’s selected form, and support choices; the game contains multiple mutually exclusive epilogues.

What happens to Rhea?

Her fate differs with the route: Crimson Flower ends in a confrontation against her, while Silver Snow includes a final battle in which her survival can depend on conditions. Other routes do not share those exact events.
