Rise Kujikawa久慈川りせ
Pop idol and first-year Yasogami High student; Investigation Team navigator
Rise Kujikawa is a major character in Atlus’s role-playing game Persona 4 and its expanded edition, Persona 4 Golden. A nationally recognized teenage idol under the stage name Risette, she unexpectedly suspends her entertainment career and moves to the quiet town of Inaba, where her grandmother runs Marukyu Tofu. She transfers into the first year at Yasogami High School, one grade below the protagonist.
Fame makes her immediately recognizable, but it also complicates her wish to be treated as an ordinary person. Much of Rise’s story concerns the uneasy distance between the cheerful star whom audiences know and the different sides of herself that she has yet to reconcile.
Biography
A Rising Idol Takes a Break
Rise has appeared in songs, television dramas, and commercials as Risette, and her entertainment career is gaining momentum when she abruptly announces a hiatus. Rather than continue performing to a demanding public image, she leaves her usual surroundings for Inaba. The break gives her a chance to ask what she still enjoys about being an idol and how much of her identity she has been letting other people define.
In Inaba, Rise stays with her grandmother, who operates Marukyu Tofu in the Central Shopping District. She helps out at the shop, although visitors still recognize the famous girl behind the counter. The contrast is uncomfortable but revealing: serving customers and spending time with family offer an everyday life far removed from entertainment schedules, even as her celebrity follows her into town.
First Year in Inaba
Rise transfers into the first year at Yasogami High School, one grade below the protagonist and several of his friends. She is already famous before she arrives, but being known by name is different from knowing people personally. She has to make friends in a place where many classmates have encountered Risette on television before meeting Rise herself.
Her arrival occurs amid the disappearances and strange rumors surrounding Inaba’s Midnight Channel, an eerie late-night television phenomenon. Students investigating those incidents take an interest in her safety. The events that draw her more deeply into their search—and change what she can contribute to it—are covered in the spoiler section.
The Person Behind Risette
Rise does not simply dislike performing. She enjoys the attention and creative work that comes with being an idol, yet she also fears that people are interested only in a ready-made image. At her grandmother’s shop and at school, she encounters a different problem: without a public role to play, she is unsure how she wants others to see her. Her conflicting feelings about the spotlight and ordinary friendship form the central tension of her character.
Personality and Motivations
Rise is talkative, playful, expressive, and often quick to tease. She can be strikingly forward with people she likes, but that confidence exists alongside an acute worry about being judged through the Risette persona. When she feels reduced to a celebrity, she can become defensive or frustrated rather than simply maintaining a smile.
She is also unusually frank about her confusion over identity. She wants to be appreciated for her company and opinions, not treated as a rare opportunity to meet an idol. Her uncertainty is not shyness in disguise: she can enjoy the stage, speak boldly, and still worry about whether other people know the person beneath the performance.
Once comfortable, Rise shows a mischievous sense of humor and a sometimes competitive streak. She enjoys spicy food but is a notoriously unreliable cook, an everyday weakness that sharply contrasts with her polished professional skills. She is also attentive to friends who need encouragement and willing to put her public confidence to use for a group rather than only for herself.
Appearance
Rise is a petite teenage girl with long reddish-brown hair gathered into two high, voluminous ponytails, side-swept bangs, and warm brown eyes. Her lively expressions and distinctive twin-tailed hairstyle are prominent features of the original Persona 4 character design.
At Yasogami High, she wears the school’s dark uniform with yellow neckwear and small pink earrings. She is also depicted in casual clothes and bright stage outfits reflecting her work as an idol. The outfits vary by occasion, and the fictional role or setting of a particular illustration should not be treated as her one permanent look.

Abilities
Professional performance
Rise is a practiced singer and television performer whose idol career includes music, dramas, commercials, and work before an audience. Her expressive confidence comes from professional experience rather than supernatural power.
Persona-based navigation
With Himiko, Rise detects and analyzes enemies and communicates information to the Investigation Team. She guides allies during dungeon exploration and battle rather than filling one of the normal player-controlled attack slots.
Limitations: Her support options vary with story progression and optional Social Link ranks; her navigation is not unrestricted knowledge of every enemy or situation.

Interesting facts
Rise is already visible in a Quelorie Magic commercial during the opening portion of Persona 4.
Players encounter her public celebrity image before the story has properly introduced the private person behind it.
In the Japanese version, her idol nickname is Risechī; the English localization uses Risette.
The two names refer to the same character and explain why Japanese and English fan discussions use different labels.
Rise’s distinct pink-and-white oval glasses are associated with her appearances in the TV World.
They distinguish her TV World look from her everyday school uniform rather than indicating a different character design.
Rise’s notorious cooking experiments include a bright red omelet and habanero chocolate, reflecting her taste for spicy food.
These concrete culinary disasters contrast with the precision of her professional performances and recur in the game’s lighter character moments.
Character designer Shigenori Soejima gave Rise unusually full twin ponytails to evoke a consciously styled television-idol image.
The hairstyle was chosen to communicate the tension between an appealing public persona and the person who has to live with it.
During early planning, Rise was considered as a combat party member with a delinquent-inspired design and a bamboo practice sword before the team settled on her support role.
It highlights an actual change in character development: Kanji ultimately took the delinquent-style fighting role, while Rise became the group’s navigator.

Major story spoilers below.
Disappearance and the Marukyu Striptease
When an image resembling Rise appears on the Midnight Channel, the Investigation Team visits Marukyu Tofu to warn her. The students later watch the shop, but attention turns to a suspicious photographer outside; when they return, Rise is gone. Her next appearance on the channel makes the danger unmistakable. The team searches for her in Marukyu Striptease, a TV World dungeon that transforms her anxiety about being watched into a grotesque stage spectacle.
Shadow Rise asserts that the marketable idol Risette is a fabrication and insists that everyone look at what she claims is the real Rise. Rise rejects this unsettling version of herself, and the Shadow turns hostile. Its sensationalized behavior is a distortion of Rise’s fears about exposure and identity, not an objective statement of what she secretly wants.
Accepting the Shadow and Awakening Himiko
When the team’s usual attacks fail against Shadow Rise, Teddie intervenes and breaks the confrontation. Rise then recognizes that she cannot divide herself into one false idol and one authentic ordinary girl: her public performances, private feelings, and unwanted Shadow all belong to her. Accepting the Shadow awakens Himiko. Her insight unsettles Teddie, who is struggling with the question of whether he has a genuine self. When his own Shadow appears, Rise uses her new sensing abilities to guide the team through the next battle.
After the ordeal, Rise recovers and meets the students again. She admits that she has sometimes adjusted her manner to seem likable, while Chie and Yukiko reassure her that people can have more than one side. Teddie has prepared TV World glasses for her, and she formally joins the Investigation Team as its navigator, taking over the role he had filled before. The new friendships are meaningful to her as well as strategically valuable to the group.
Lovers Social Link: A Career Choice, Not a Fixed Romance
Rise’s optional Lovers Social Link follows the personal uncertainty that remains after her rescue. Her former manager, Minoru Inoue, and the growing attention around another idol, Kanami Mashita, remind her of the career she has left behind. A letter from a devoted Risette fan troubles her: it suggests that a performance she had dismissed as artificial meant something sincere to another person. Those encounters make her rethink whether abandoning her stage identity is the only way to become herself.
Completing the Social Link leads Rise to embrace Risette as one genuine part of herself, without letting that part define her entire worth. She decides to pursue entertainment work again by choice rather than merely following what others expect. This development is tied to an optional Social Link, so it should not be described as a compulsory scene in every playthrough.
At a specific Social Link decision, the protagonist may pursue a romantic relationship with Rise or continue as her friend; the game does not require one choice. Reaching maximum rank evolves Himiko into Kanzeon and unlocks the Lovers ultimate Persona fusion reward. In Golden, a further eligible winter meeting can evolve Kanzeon into Kouzeon. The romance decision and optional Persona upgrades must not be confused with mandatory story events.
New Moments in Persona 4 Golden
Golden expands the year with outings that let Rise enjoy ordinary friendships away from celebrity expectations. She joins the group for a summer scooter trip to Shichiri Beach and a fireworks outing. In October, when a planned idol visit to Junes falls through, Yosuke asks her to perform there. Rise agrees only if her friends join her as a live backing band; after hurried rehearsals, they perform “True Story” together. She gets to bring her stage confidence into a setting where she is also one of the group.
Further Golden events include winter gatherings and a skiing trip with the Investigation Team. For players who have completed Rise’s Lovers Social Link, a separate eligible winter scene allows the additional Persona transformation to Kouzeon. These events enrich the friendship and gameplay opportunities without turning any one romance route into a universal outcome.
Farewell and Golden’s Optional Summer Epilogue
Rise remains an Investigation Team companion as the larger case unfolds. When the protagonist leaves Inaba after the main story, she is among the friends who see him off, and the farewell moves her to tears. Her personal resolution—when her optional Social Link is completed—is that being Risette and being Rise are not mutually exclusive. Neither the base game nor Golden requires that she be the protagonist’s girlfriend.
If the conditions for Golden’s extended ending are fulfilled, the story also shows a summer reunion months later. Rise joins the others in surprising the returning protagonist and shares their familiar banter during a gathering at the Dojima home. This is a conditional epilogue, not a scene guaranteed by every possible ending, and it does not establish a compulsory romance for Rise.
Additional story facts
During Golden’s skiing trip, Rise’s jacket bears the inscription “Lovers 06,” referencing the sixth Major Arcana associated with her Social Link.
This small costume detail links an everyday winter scene with her established Arcana without changing the story or her abilities.
Spoiler questions
How does Rise obtain Himiko?
During the Marukyu Striptease confrontation, Rise finally accepts the Shadow she initially rejected. That acceptance awakens Himiko, which she uses to support the team when Teddie’s Shadow emerges.
Does Rise return to being an idol?
If her optional Lovers Social Link is completed, Rise decides to pursue an idol career again while recognizing Risette as a genuine part of herself. The decision is not a mandatory Social Link scene in every playthrough.
What happens to Rise’s Persona after Himiko?
Completing the Lovers Social Link evolves Himiko into Kanzeon. In Persona 4 Golden, an additional eligible winter event after that completion can evolve Kanzeon into Kouzeon.
Is Rise automatically the protagonist’s girlfriend?
No. A choice within her Lovers Social Link determines whether their relationship becomes romantic or remains a friendship.
Why does Rise join the Investigation Team?
After escaping the TV World and awakening Himiko, Rise can sense enemies and offer navigation. She also finds friends who have seen more than her celebrity image, giving her a personal reason to stay with the group.
Does Persona 4 Golden include a concert with Rise?
Yes. In Golden, Rise sings “True Story” at Junes while the Investigation Team accompanies her as a hastily assembled live band.
Does Rise appear in Persona 4 Golden’s summer epilogue?
Yes, if the player unlocks the extended Golden ending. Rise appears with the Investigation Team at the protagonist’s summer return to Inaba, but that epilogue is not shown in every possible ending.
