Eris Boreas Greyratエリス・ボレアス・グレイラット
A Boreas Greyrat noblewoman, aspiring swordswoman, and Rudeus Greyrat’s early pupil and traveling companion
Eris Boreas Greyrat is a major character in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Raised in the Boreas noble household in Roa, she is a talented young swordswoman with a fierce temper and little patience for conventional lessons. Her family hires Rudeus Greyrat to tutor her, while the veteran swordswoman Ghislaine Dedoldia trains her with a blade.
When a magical catastrophe throws Eris and Rudeus onto the Demon Continent, their lessons at the estate give way to a hazardous journey home alongside the Superd warrior Ruijerd.
Biography
A Difficult Pupil in Roa
Eris grows up in the Boreas Greyrat household in Roa, the principal city of Fittoa Territory. Her father, Philip, belongs to the local ruling family. Although Eris is accustomed to noble surroundings, her explosive reactions make ordinary instruction a challenge. Rudeus arrives as her tutor expecting a manageable assignment and quickly discovers how difficult it will be to earn her cooperation.
Sword practice offers a different picture of her. Ghislaine, an experienced beastfolk swordswoman employed by the Boreas family, teaches Eris the Sword God Style. Eris embraces the demanding physical work far more readily than lessons in reading and other academic subjects; Rudeus must find ways to teach someone who would rather be sparring.
Learning to Work with Rudeus
Eris and Rudeus begin as an ill-matched pupil and teacher, with arguments frequently interrupting their lessons. Over time, however, they learn to rely on one another. His talent for magic and planning contrasts with her direct, physically aggressive approach. Their growing trust becomes essential when they are unexpectedly forced to face dangers far removed from Roa.
The Long Journey with Dead End
The Fittoa displacement catastrophe sends Eris and Rudeus to the Demon Continent, far from anyone who might help them return home. There they meet Ruijerd Superdia, a member of the feared Superd people. Traveling together as the adventuring party Dead End, the three cross hostile and unfamiliar territory while trying to reach the Asura Kingdom.
The journey puts Eris's sword training to immediate use. She faces real combat, learns from Ruijerd's experience, and comes to respect a man whom strangers often judge by his ancestry. Her privileged upbringing offers little protection on the road; surviving depends on the three companions working together.
Personality and Motivations
Eris is proud, hot-tempered, and intensely competitive. As a child she sometimes responds to frustration with her fists, particularly when she feels challenged or is pushed into lessons she dislikes. Her enthusiasm for swordsmanship, by contrast, is matched by a willingness to practice hard and repeatedly test herself against stronger fighters.
Travel reveals a loyalty that her first impression rarely suggests. Eris respects demonstrated skill, takes Ruijerd's instruction seriously, and becomes more dependable in dangerous situations. She is far more comfortable acting decisively than explaining delicate feelings, which can make her intentions difficult for others to understand.
Appearance
Eris has vivid crimson hair that reaches her waist during her youth, along with sharply upturned eyes. The stern expression she often wears makes her look as confrontational as she can be in conversation.
Her animated designs range from the clothing of a young noblewoman to practical outfits worn during her travels. The changes suit the shift from household life in Roa to an arduous journey across unfamiliar lands.

Interesting facts
Eris has her own manga spin-off, Mushoku Tensei: Eris wa Honki de Kiba wo Togu, illustrated by Take Higake with story composition by Yuu Okano.
The spin-off gives her sword-training years a dedicated adaptation, separate from the main manga's focus on Rudeus.
Ai Kakuma voices Eris in the Japanese television anime.
Kakuma is also credited for Eris in the anime's later sword-training arc, providing continuity across very different stages of the character's portrayal.

Major story spoilers below.
A Home That No Longer Exists
On returning to Fittoa, Eris learns that her family home has been destroyed and the people she hoped to see are gone. Her parents, Philip and Hilda, died in the aftermath of the displacement, while her grandfather Sauros was executed after political blame fell on him. The future once available to her as a Boreas noblewoman has disappeared.
Eris and Rudeus become romantically close, but the encounter with the overwhelmingly powerful Dragon God Orsted has exposed how far Eris still has to go as a fighter. She leaves with Ghislaine for the Holy Land of Swords, determined to become strong enough to fight beside Rudeus. The short message she leaves does not communicate that intention clearly. Rudeus reads her departure as rejection, beginning years of painful separation.
A Sword King in Training
At the Holy Land of Swords, Eris trains under Sword God Gal Farion. She encounters his daughter Nina, another ambitious swordswoman, and fighters from other schools, including the Water God practitioner Isolte and North God Style master Auber Corvette. Exposure to unfamiliar styles forces her to contend with more than straightforward clashes of strength.
Eris eventually earns the rank of Sword King in the Sword God Style. Gal regards her training as sufficiently advanced to recognize her mastery, but she does not take the titles of Sword Emperor or Sword God. Her immediate purpose is to return to the people she has trained to protect.
The Five-Year Reunion
After a visit from his time-traveling older self, Rudeus learns of a possible future in which his family suffers terrible losses. Before fighting Orsted, he writes to Eris, from whom he has been separated for five years. Eris arrives during the confrontation and helps defend him against an opponent neither can defeat alone.
Rudeus survives and becomes Orsted's subordinate rather than his continuing enemy. In the aftermath, Eris and Rudeus finally address why she left and how badly he misunderstood her letter. Their reunion also requires Eris to face the fact that Rudeus has married Sylphiette and Roxy in the intervening years.
Marriage, Children, and a New Household
Eris becomes Rudeus's third wife, joining Sylphiette and Roxy. Marriage does not end her swordsmanship: she remains an able frontline ally as Rudeus undertakes assignments for Orsted. Unlike her former life in Roa, this household is one she enters after choosing both her partner and her own role within the family.
Eris and Rudeus have a son, Ars, and a daughter, Christina. Their children's later lives form part of the continuing Greyrat family story. In Redundant Reincarnation, Ars's sudden elopement becomes a particularly serious family crisis.
The Asuran Succession Struggle
Eris accompanies Rudeus and their allies as Orsted backs Princess Ariel's bid for the throne of Asura. During the struggle, she and Ghislaine join Rudeus in fighting Auber Corvette, an accomplished North God Style swordsman defending the hostile court faction. After Auber is defeated, Ghislaine kills the minister Darius. For Eris, the campaign brings her back into Asuran affairs long after the fall of the Boreas household.
The Battle Against Gal Farion
Years later, the Biheiril conflict places Gal Farion, Eris's former teacher, among the forces opposed to Rudeus's allies. Eris faces Gal with Ruijerd at her side. Their coordination proves decisive, and Gal dies in the encounter. The outcome is not a straightforward one-on-one victory: Eris's trust in her old traveling companion matters as much as her own swordsmanship.
Eris also fights with Rudeus's coalition against Badigadi, who appears equipped with the formidable Fighting God Armor. The coalition survives the climactic struggle, but this victory does not mean the Man-God himself has been killed. Eris's years of training have made her a valued combatant in conflicts far beyond the estate where she first studied the sword.
Her Final Years and the Future That Was Averted
Eris continues sword practice even after passing seventy. Later, she returns from exercise, goes to bed, and does not wake again. Her death comes in old age, not on a battlefield, and Rudeus lives longer than she does.
The diary of the older Rudeus describes a different outcome in a doomed alternative future. There, Eris dies while protecting him during a confrontation involving Atofe. That death is not part of the changed main timeline after the older Rudeus delivers his warning.
Spoiler questions
Why does Eris leave Rudeus?
After the disastrous encounter with Orsted, Eris leaves with Ghislaine to become strong enough to protect Rudeus and fight beside him. Her brief farewell makes Rudeus believe she has rejected him.
Does Eris become a Sword King?
Yes. After training under Gal Farion, she earns the Sword King rank. She does not become Sword God.
When do Eris and Rudeus reunite?
They reunite during the events of light novel volume 15, roughly five years after their separation, when Eris reaches Rudeus during his confrontation with Orsted.
Does Eris marry Rudeus?
Yes. She marries Rudeus as his third wife, after Sylphiette and Roxy.
Who are Eris’s children?
They have two children: Ars Greyrat and Christina Greyrat. Ars also appears in the Redundant Reincarnation after-stories.
Does Eris defeat Gal Farion?
Gal Farion dies after facing Eris and Ruijerd during the Biheiril conflict. The result depends on their combined actions, not on Eris winning an isolated duel.
Does Eris die in Mushoku Tensei?
Yes. Eris dies in old age in the main timeline, after continuing to train beyond seventy. The alternate future in the older Rudeus’s diary depicts a separate, violent death.
