Paul Greyratパウロ・グレイラット
Rudeus Greyrat's father, a former adventurer and swordsman serving as a knight in Buena Village
Paul Greyrat is Rudeus Greyrat's father in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, a skilled swordsman whose greatest difficulties often arise outside combat. Once an adventurer with Fangs of the Black Wolf, he settles in Buena Village with his wife, Zenith, and serves as the local knight. Paul trains his son in swordsmanship and takes an interest in his future, but his quick temper, infidelity and poor judgment repeatedly strain the family.
He is neither an exemplary father nor a man without redeeming qualities. His considerable fighting ability, affection for his children and capacity for serious mistakes make him one of the story's more complicated parental figures.
Biography
An Adventurer's Life Before Buena Village
Long before Rudeus was born, Paul traveled as an adventurer with Fangs of the Black Wolf, a party whose members included Zenith, Ghislaine, Elinalise, Talhand and Geese. Paul served as its leader and developed the martial experience that would later support his work as a knight. His companions brought different talents to the group, ranging from swordsmanship and magic to healing and information gathering. Their shared past continued to connect them even after the party disbanded.
Paul's training was unusually broad. He reached Advanced rank in all three major schools of swordsmanship: Sword God Style, Water God Style and North God Style. Rather than specializing exclusively in one discipline, he acquired techniques from several traditions. His experience made him a formidable conventional fighter, although Advanced rank remained below the higher classifications attained by some of the setting's most accomplished swordsmen.
Paul eventually abandoned adventuring and established a household with Zenith, another former party member. They settled in Buena Village in the Fittoa region of the Asura Kingdom, where Paul served as the resident knight. Their eldest child, Rudeus, was born into a family already familiar with the dangers and practical demands of life outside the village.
Teaching a Remarkably Gifted Son
Rudeus displays an extraordinary aptitude for magic while still a small child. Paul is a swordsman rather than a magical specialist, so the family hires Roxy Migurdia to provide magical instruction. Rudeus's upbringing consequently includes both his father's martial training and lessons from a professional magician. Although Paul can pass on practical swordsmanship, he is not always prepared for the independence and unusual capabilities of his son.
The difference between Paul's expectations and Rudeus's behavior sometimes creates friction. Paul is accustomed to direct action and can be impatient when a situation does not unfold as he expects. Rudeus, meanwhile, approaches problems with an unusual degree of intelligence and self-possession for his age. Their contrasting temperaments make parenting a challenge that Paul's experience with a sword cannot readily solve.
The Affair That Changes the Household
Paul's most consequential early domestic mistake occurs when Lilia, the family's maid, becomes pregnant with his child. Zenith is already expecting another baby, making the discovery of Paul's affair particularly painful. The revelation threatens the household's stability, and Rudeus intervenes during the confrontation. Rather than treating the situation as an ordinary disagreement, the family must confront the immediate consequences of Paul's infidelity.
Zenith gives birth to Norn, and Lilia gives birth to Aisha. Both girls are Paul's daughters, although they have different mothers. The family continues living together, but that arrangement does not erase Paul's wrongdoing or the difficult circumstances surrounding the girls' births.
Sending Rudeus to Roa
Paul later sends Rudeus away from Buena Village to take a tutoring position with the Boreas Greyrat family in Roa. Ghislaine, a formidable swordswoman and one of Paul's former adventuring companions, accompanies the boy. Rudeus is assigned to teach Eris Boreas Greyrat, a noble girl whose violent temper makes the position anything but straightforward.
The arrangement places Rudeus in an unfamiliar household and gives him responsibilities beyond his childhood routines. It also separates father and son for an extended period. Although Paul's decision creates an opportunity for Rudeus to gain experience, the separation becomes more consequential than either of them initially anticipates.
Personality and Motivations
Paul is expressive, confident and quick to act. He can lead others and perform effectively in dangerous situations, yet his confidence often turns into impatience when dealing with people closest to him. He is especially prone to reacting before considering another person's circumstances. His relationship with Rudeus exposes this weakness because the boy does not always behave in ways Paul understands or expects.
His infidelity is an unmistakable personal failing. Paul betrays Zenith's trust through his relationship with Lilia, leaving others to cope with the damage. He can also be argumentative and stubborn. These behaviors coexist with genuine affection for his family, making his conduct inconsistent rather than simply malicious or consistently dependable.
Paul takes pride in his abilities and his responsibilities, but he does not always know how to fulfill the latter. As a swordsman, he can respond to an immediate threat with practiced skill. As a husband and father, he must deal with mistakes that cannot be corrected through physical strength. His willingness to recognize some of those mistakes becomes particularly important when his relationship with Rudeus is tested.
Appearance
Paul is an adult human man with an athletic build, short, tousled brown hair and green eyes. His official anime design includes a small section of hair gathered toward the back of his head. His expressive face is frequently shown with confident smiles, irritation or sharply focused attention.
During his early life in Buena Village, Paul wears practical clothing, including a light-colored lace-up shirt, brown trousers and boots. His later traveling appearance uses more protective equipment and a cloak. These details refer to the official animated character designs rather than to any specific artwork in the Luako gallery.

Interesting facts
Toshiyuki Morikawa, Paul's Japanese anime voice actor, describes the character in his official cast commentary as emotionally expressive, straightforward and gifted with the sword, yet personally immature.
Morikawa's comments provide production-side insight into Paul's animated portrayal. The contrast between his competence and immaturity was part of how the actor approached the role, rather than merely a later interpretation of his actions.

Major story spoilers below.
A Family Scattered by the Displacement Incident
The Fittoa Displacement Incident overturns the life Paul established in Buena Village. His family is scattered, the village is devastated, and he can no longer rely on the ordinary routines of his former household. Paul reunites with Norn, but Zenith, Rudeus, Lilia and Aisha remain missing. He becomes involved in efforts to locate the people displaced by the disaster, including his own family members.
Norn accompanies Paul during the search. As he struggles to find the others, his responsibilities become more difficult than the local duties he previously performed as a village knight. His fighting experience remains useful, but there is no straightforward opponent whose defeat can restore the people who have disappeared.
The Reunion That Goes Wrong
Paul encounters Rudeus again in Millishion, the capital of the Holy Country of Millis. Their reunion rapidly becomes an argument. Paul has spent the aftermath of the disaster searching for missing people and worrying about his family. Rudeus, meanwhile, has endured a dangerous journey with Eris and Ruijerd. Paul is disappointed by what he perceives as his son's insufficient concern for the missing family members, while Rudeus is hurt by his father's response to their long separation.
Geese intervenes and encourages Paul to reconsider his behavior. Paul recognizes that he has unfairly directed his frustrations toward Rudeus and decides to speak with him again. Their subsequent reconciliation allows father and son to acknowledge the pain of their separation without allowing the argument to destroy their relationship. They eventually part to continue their respective journeys.
The Search Narrows to Zenith
As the scattered members of the Greyrat family are located, Zenith remains the most difficult to recover. Lilia and Aisha, who were transported to the Shirone Kingdom, are eventually rescued, and the family's search increasingly focuses on Zenith. Paul continues pursuing information about her whereabouts while relying on help from former adventuring companions.
Paul eventually follows the search to the Begaritt Continent. Before the dangerous expedition, he arranges for Norn and Aisha to travel under escort to Rudeus, who is living near Ranoa University of Magic. Paul communicates his wishes for the girls' education, entrusting their immediate care to their older brother. Norn initially struggles with the arrangement because she remembers Rudeus's earlier confrontation with Paul, while Aisha adapts more readily.
Paul's search continues alongside companions including Geese and Talhand. Their efforts eventually lead toward the labyrinth city of Rapan, where Zenith is believed to be trapped. Finding her becomes a prolonged and increasingly desperate undertaking.
Rudeus Arrives in Rapan
When Geese sends word that the rescue is proving too difficult, Rudeus decides to assist despite having a pregnant wife and his sisters at home. He travels with Elinalise across the Begaritt Continent and eventually reaches Rapan. There, they find Geese, Paul and Lilia. Paul is worn down by the unsuccessful effort to save Zenith, and Rudeus tries to reassure him.
The rescue party has also encountered difficulties involving Roxy, who became stranded inside the Teleportation Labyrinth. Rudeus and his companions retrieve her, after which the group temporarily withdraws to recover and prepare for another attempt. With Roxy safe and additional help available, Paul can return to the labyrinth with renewed prospects of reaching his wife.
The Descent Toward Zenith
Paul joins Rudeus, Roxy, Elinalise, Talhand and Geese in the renewed expedition. The labyrinth contains dangerous monsters and magical transportation mechanisms, requiring the group to combine its martial abilities, spellcasting and practical knowledge. After progressing through its lower levels, the rescuers finally discover Zenith imprisoned within a magical crystal.
A powerful Manatite Hydra guards the crystal. The creature's many heads, regenerative capabilities and resistance to magic make a direct assault especially dangerous. Paul initially attacks with great urgency, but the party cannot simply overwhelm the monster. The group must coordinate its movements and find a way to prevent the severed heads from regenerating.
The rescuers organize their efforts around Paul's swordsmanship and Rudeus's magic. Paul attacks the hydra's heads, while Rudeus helps prevent their regeneration by burning the exposed wounds. Their companions support the assault and help contain the monster's attacks. The revised approach allows the party to make progress, but it cannot eliminate the danger of a single mistake.
Paul's Final Sacrifice
During the decisive confrontation, the hydra threatens Rudeus at close range. Paul reacts quickly and pushes his son out of the path of the attack, taking a fatal blow himself. Rudeus subsequently loses his left arm while delivering the attack that helps finish the monster. The party defeats the hydra and frees Zenith, but Paul has been mortally wounded.
Paul dies in the Teleportation Labyrinth. His final act saves the son with whom he once struggled so painfully to communicate. The rescue therefore ends with a devastating contradiction: Zenith is recovered, but the man who spent so long searching for her will never return home with her.
The Family After Paul's Death
Zenith survives her captivity but emerges in a profoundly altered condition. She does not speak or respond normally to her family, leaving Rudeus with uncertainty about her recovery. At the same time, he is devastated by the loss of Paul and the physical injuries he suffered during the battle.
Rudeus must confront the death of a father who was frequently irresponsible but who also loved his family and ultimately gave his life to protect him. Their reconciliation in Millishion had allowed them to repair an important part of their relationship, yet the sudden loss leaves much of their shared future unrealized. Paul's death becomes one of the most painful consequences of the family's long separation after the Displacement Incident.
Additional story facts

The composition brings together the members of the rescue expedition and visually centers the person they are trying to recover. It also reunites several figures connected to Paul's earlier adventuring life for the story's decisive rescue operation.
