Rudeus Greyratルーデウス・グレイラット
Protagonist; reincarnated human magician
Rudeus Greyrat is the protagonist of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, the fantasy light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Shirotaka. Born into the Greyrat family in Buena Village, he carries the memories of a 34-year-old Japanese recluse whose first life ended in a traffic accident. Determined not to waste his unexpected second chance, Rudeus begins studying magic as a small child and discovers an unusual talent for casting spells without spoken incantations.
His first teacher, Roxy Migurdia, helps him overcome the fear of leaving home that has followed him from his previous life. He later befriends Sylphiette and becomes the tutor of Eris Boreas Greyrat. When a magical disaster transports him and Eris to the distant Demon Continent, the two join forces with the Superd warrior Ruijerd to find their way home.
Rudeus's magical talent is remarkable, but he remains deeply flawed: his insecurity, inappropriate behavior, poor decisions, and difficulty handling relationships repeatedly complicate his determination to live differently.
Biography
A Second Life in Buena Village
Before his reincarnation, Rudeus lived in modern Japan as an unemployed 34-year-old man who had spent years avoiding society. After being thrown out of his family home, he died in a traffic accident while attempting to save students from an approaching truck. He then awakened as the newborn son of Paul and Zenith Greyrat in the Asura Kingdom. His new parents knew nothing of his former existence, but Rudeus retained its memories, including the regrets and fears that had shaped his isolation.
Growing up in the small village of Buena, Rudeus discovers books about magic and begins practicing long before most children would receive formal instruction. He experiments with water spells and learns to cast certain types of magic without reciting their incantations. His unusual progress convinces his parents to hire a private tutor. Although he possesses knowledge beyond his apparent age, much of his understanding of the new world must be learned through experience.
Roxy and the World Beyond His Door
Roxy Migurdia arrives at the Greyrat household to teach Rudeus magic. Under her guidance, he develops his control over spells and gains a clearer understanding of magical practice. His progress impresses his teacher, but his greatest obstacle is not an examination or a difficult incantation. Memories of his former life have left him terrified of venturing beyond his home.
For his graduation, Roxy takes him outside the village and helps him confront that fear. The experience gives Rudeus something his previous life had largely denied him: the confidence to face an unfamiliar world. Her influence extends far beyond the spells she teaches, and he continues to regard her with exceptional respect after her departure.
His First Friend, Sylphiette
While exploring the area around Buena Village, Rudeus encounters Sylphiette, a green-haired child being bullied by other children. After coming to her aid, he discovers that she is interested in magic and begins teaching her. The two develop a close friendship, giving Rudeus an opportunity to form a personal connection outside his family and the structured relationship he had with Roxy.
Rudeus enjoys Sylphiette's company, but his behavior also exposes the limits of his social judgment. He sometimes acts according to assumptions rather than considering her feelings or independence. Their friendship becomes one of his earliest lessons in dealing with another person as more than an extension of his own wishes.
Tutoring Eris Boreas Greyrat
Paul arranges for Rudeus to work as a tutor in the city of Roa, where he meets Eris Boreas Greyrat, the daughter of a powerful noble household. Eris has little patience for academic lessons and reacts aggressively to his attempts at instruction. Their early encounters are marked by arguments and physical confrontations, forcing Rudeus to recognize that his magical talent cannot solve every problem.
Over time, Eris begins taking his lessons more seriously, while Rudeus comes to appreciate her determination and ability with a sword. He also receives combat instruction from Ghislaine Dedoldia, an accomplished swordswoman employed by the Boreas family. His years in Roa broaden his experience beyond the sheltered routine of Buena Village, though his relationship with Eris remains turbulent.
The Fittoa Displacement Incident
A sudden magical catastrophe engulfs the Fittoa region and transports countless people to distant locations. Rudeus and Eris find themselves stranded on the Demon Continent, separated from their homes and families. Rudeus must now use the skills he developed in relative safety to keep himself and Eris alive in unfamiliar territory.
They soon encounter Ruijerd Superdia, a warrior of the feared Superd tribe. Despite everything Rudeus has heard about the Superd, Ruijerd protects the two children and helps them begin the journey home. Rudeus discovers that the terrifying reputation attached to Ruijerd's people does not adequately describe the individual standing before him.
The Adventures of Dead End
Rudeus, Eris, and Ruijerd travel together as the adventuring party Dead End. Their journey takes them through dangerous settlements and wilderness as they work to reach the Asura Kingdom. Rudeus often handles negotiations, planning, and magical attacks, while Ruijerd's experience and Eris's growing swordsmanship are vital to the group's survival.
Life as an adventurer forces Rudeus to make decisions under pressure. He encounters monsters, difficult employers, unfamiliar customs, and situations in which hesitation can have serious consequences. His attempts to balance caution, profit, and the safety of his companions do not always succeed. The journey also brings him into contact with the enigmatic Man-God, who appears in his dreams and offers advice whose full implications remain unclear.
Personality and Motivations
Rudeus approaches magic with patience and curiosity. As a child, he spends long periods experimenting with spells because he wants to understand their effects, not merely reproduce what he has read. He enjoys learning and often tries to solve unfamiliar problems through observation, preparation, and trial and error. His enthusiasm for magical study is one of the clearest ways in which he acts on his decision to make better use of his second life.
Social situations are much less straightforward for him. The bullying and isolation he experienced in Japan continue to influence his fear of rejection and unfamiliar environments. He can be polite and accommodating in conversation while privately feeling anxious or resentful. He sometimes avoids difficult emotional situations instead of confronting them directly, even when doing so would prevent misunderstandings.
Rudeus also retains serious faults from his previous life. He makes disrespectful remarks, violates personal boundaries, and sometimes regards others through selfish expectations. His determination to improve does not immediately correct these behaviors. The narrative repeatedly places his stated intentions beside actions that fall short of them, leaving him responsible for the consequences.
When traveling with companions, he generally prefers a calculated approach to danger. He considers possible outcomes, tries to obtain information, and relies on cooperation rather than treating every encounter as an opportunity to prove his strength. Yet he can still misjudge people or become overwhelmed when personal relationships are involved. His greatest challenges often arise from uncertainty, grief, and responsibility rather than a shortage of magical power.
Appearance
Rudeus is a fair-skinned human male with light brown hair and green eyes. His hair is generally short and somewhat tousled, with a recognizable tuft near the top. Official character designs depict him at several ages, reflecting the story's progression from his childhood in Buena Village to adolescence and adulthood.
His clothing changes with his surroundings. Early designs show practical shirts, vests, shorts, trousers, and boots, while his later adventures introduce traveling clothes and robes associated with his work as a magician. His appearance becomes more mature as he grows, without losing the recognizable features established in his childhood designs.

Abilities
Chantless Spellcasting
Rudeus can cast many offensive spells without reciting their usual incantations. He develops the technique through childhood experimentation, allowing him to release magic quickly and adjust the magical energy used in an attack.
Limitations: His chantless technique does not extend to healing and detoxification magic in the same way. Those disciplines require incantations when he uses them.
Water Magic
Water magic forms the foundation of Rudeus's early training. He learns to create and manipulate water, develops increasingly powerful spells, and receives formal instruction from Roxy.
Limitations: Casting a powerful water spell does not guarantee an effective attack; accuracy, timing, and the target's defenses still matter.
Earth Magic
Rudeus can shape and manipulate earth and stone. He uses earth magic to launch projectiles and alter terrain, making it useful for both combat and practical tasks.
Limitations: Earth-based attacks can be avoided or countered, particularly by opponents whose speed exceeds his ability to aim and react.
Eye of Foresight
Rudeus possesses a Demon Eye that allows him to glimpse an opponent's possible movements a short time into the future. The ability gives him valuable information when anticipating attacks.
Limitations: Looking further ahead creates increasingly complicated possible images. Even when he predicts an attack, he may lack the physical speed needed to evade it.
Swordsmanship Training
Rudeus receives swordsmanship instruction during childhood and continues learning basic martial techniques during his time in Roa. This gives him practical experience with armed combat.
Limitations: He cannot match highly trained sword specialists such as Eris, Ghislaine, and Ruijerd in direct physical combat.
Combat Planning
Rudeus combines preparation, magical versatility, and cooperation with his companions when approaching dangerous encounters. He often attempts to control a battle's conditions rather than rely on direct confrontation.
Limitations: His plans can fail when an opponent has abilities he does not understand or when circumstances change too quickly for him to respond.

Interesting facts
Rudeus receives his Eye of Foresight from Kishirika Kishirisu after helping her with food during his travels on the Demon Continent.
The ability enters his life through an unusual encounter rather than formal training. Its usefulness also depends on learning to interpret the possibilities it reveals.
Seven Seas Entertainment issued revised English editions of early Mushoku Tensei light novel volumes beginning in March 2021.
The revisions explain why passages in older English printings or digital copies may differ from later editions of Rudeus's early story.

Major story spoilers below.
Eris's Departure and a Painful Return
After their long journey, Rudeus and Eris finally return to the devastated Fittoa region. The experiences they shared on the Demon Continent have brought them closer, but their reunion with home does not lead to the future Rudeus expects. Eris decides that she must become a stronger swordswoman before she can stand beside him as an equal. She leaves to pursue intensive training, communicating her decision through a letter that Rudeus misunderstands as rejection.
The separation leaves Rudeus emotionally devastated. Despite surviving extraordinary dangers, he struggles to deal with the apparent loss of someone he has come to love. Eris's actual intentions and Rudeus's interpretation of her departure remain different, and that misunderstanding shapes several years of his life.
The Adventurer Known as Quagmire
Rudeus travels north in search of information about his missing mother, Zenith. He earns money through adventuring work and begins establishing a reputation under the epithet Quagmire. In Rosenburg, he takes on dangerous assignments while trying to distract himself from his loneliness and uncertainty. His competence as a magician grows, but his emotional condition remains fragile.
He becomes acquainted with the adventurer Sara and her companions. His developing relationship with Sara ends badly after an intimate encounter exposes difficulties connected to his unresolved feelings about Eris. The misunderstanding that follows deepens his sense of failure. These experiences make it increasingly clear that a successful adventuring career cannot by itself restore his confidence or resolve his personal problems.
Ranoa University and the Return of Sylphiette
Rudeus receives an invitation to attend the Ranoa University of Magic and enrolls as a special student. His new surroundings introduce him to accomplished and eccentric individuals, including Zanoba Shirone, Cliff Grimoire, and the masked researcher Nanahoshi. His studies provide a more stable routine after years spent traveling, although his personal problems remain unresolved.
One of the university's most mysterious students is Silent Fitz, a magician serving Princess Ariel Anemoi Asura. Fitz is actually Sylphiette, who survived the Fittoa Displacement Incident and eventually became Ariel's guardian. Rudeus does not immediately recognize his childhood friend because her appearance and circumstances have changed. When her identity is revealed, their renewed friendship develops into a romantic relationship.
Sylphiette helps Rudeus overcome the intimate difficulties that followed his separation from Eris. The two acknowledge their feelings and decide to marry. Rudeus purchases a home, continues his research, and begins building a domestic life that would once have seemed impossible to him. His relationship with Sylphiette marks a new stage in which he must consider another person's future alongside his own.
Taking Responsibility for Norn and Aisha
Rudeus's younger sisters, Norn and Aisha, are placed in his care while Paul continues searching for Zenith. The arrangement brings new responsibilities into his household. Aisha is capable and eager to help, but Norn's feelings toward her older brother are complicated by memories of his conflict with Paul. She initially finds living with Rudeus difficult and withdraws from others.
Rather than forcing Norn to behave according to his expectations, Rudeus gradually recognizes that she needs support and room to develop her own confidence. Their relationship improves as he makes a more serious effort to understand her situation. Caring for his sisters becomes an important part of his transition from a talented young adventurer to someone responsible for a household.
The Teleportation Labyrinth and Paul's Sacrifice
Information about Zenith's location draws Rudeus to the Begaritt Continent, where he reunites with Paul and joins the expedition into the Teleportation Labyrinth near Rapan. The rescue party includes experienced adventurers familiar with the dangers of labyrinth exploration. Rudeus also finds Roxy, who has become separated from her companions while participating in the search.
Deep inside the labyrinth, the rescuers discover Zenith imprisoned within a magical crystal. Reaching her requires a battle against a formidable hydra whose scales interfere with magic. During the fight, Paul sacrifices himself to save Rudeus, while Rudeus loses his left hand. They succeed in freeing Zenith, but the victory comes at a devastating cost.
Zenith survives, yet her long imprisonment has left her in a condition that prevents ordinary communication. Rudeus returns with his mother but without his father, confronting a mixture of relief, grief, and guilt. Paul's death changes the way Rudeus understands the responsibilities and sacrifices involved in protecting a family.
Roxy's Marriage and a Growing Household
Rudeus struggles severely with Paul's death until Roxy becomes involved in helping him recover. Their relationship becomes intimate despite his existing marriage to Sylphiette. After the expedition, Roxy returns with him and becomes his second wife. The decision is not simply a continuation of his childhood admiration for her: it creates new obligations within an already established marriage.
Sylphiette gives birth to their first child, Lucy, while the household adapts to Roxy's arrival and the continuing care of Zenith. Rudeus also receives a functional prosthetic hand developed through the work of Zanoba and Cliff, allowing him to compensate for the injury suffered in the labyrinth. His family life becomes increasingly important, even as his relationships and magical research continue drawing him into unexpected situations.
Oldeus and the Future That Must Be Prevented
Rudeus's life takes a terrifying turn when an elderly man appears and reveals himself to be a future version of Rudeus. Often called Oldeus by readers, the visitor has used a dangerous time-travel technique to warn his younger self. His appearance and the diary he brings expose the disastrous consequences of following the Man-God's seemingly harmless instructions.
In Oldeus's timeline, a rat carrying a deadly illness escapes after Rudeus follows the Man-God's advice to enter the basement. Roxy becomes infected and dies, setting off a series of tragedies. Grief and increasingly destructive behavior ruin Rudeus's remaining relationships. Sylphiette dies after becoming involved in Ariel's failed political struggle, while Eris later loses her life protecting him. These events belong to Oldeus's alternate history, not to the main timeline after his intervention.
Oldeus leaves his diary and urgently advises Rudeus to distrust the Man-God, seek Nanahoshi's assistance, and reconnect with Eris. His warning allows Rudeus to avoid the immediate trap and prevent the future he has described. The encounter also exposes how much of Rudeus's earlier cooperation with the Man-God rested on incomplete information about the being's intentions.
The Magic Armor and the Battle with Orsted
Believing that the Man-God threatens his family, Rudeus prepares to fight Dragon God Orsted. Working with Zanoba and Cliff, he develops powerful Magic Armor intended to compensate for his physical vulnerabilities and allow him to use his enormous magical reserves more effectively. The equipment combines enhanced protection with offensive capabilities suited to fighting exceptionally dangerous opponents.
Even with extensive preparation, Rudeus proves unable to defeat Orsted. The battle overwhelms him, and Eris returns after years of swordsmanship training to help him survive. Her arrival finally brings the two back together under circumstances that make her determination to become stronger unmistakable.
Rudeus ultimately abandons the attempt to kill Orsted and becomes his subordinate. Orsted's powerful healing magic also restores the limbs Rudeus has lost, including his left hand from the hydra battle. The confrontation transforms his position in the larger conflict: he is no longer acting under the Man-God's guidance but working with an enemy of that mysterious being.
Eris and Rudeus reconcile, and she becomes his third wife alongside Sylphiette and Roxy. Their marriage follows a long separation rather than replacing the relationships Rudeus has established in her absence. Managing the resulting household becomes part of his continuing responsibilities.
Orsted's Missions and the Asuran Succession
Once formally allied with Orsted, Rudeus receives his first major mission: help Princess Ariel claim the throne of the Asura Kingdom. The assignment draws him into political maneuvering, negotiations, and battles involving powerful figures whose ambitions extend beyond the succession itself. The Man-God attempts to interfere through agents and relationships that Rudeus cannot always identify in advance.
Rudeus's assistance contributes to Ariel's eventual accession. Her victory provides Orsted with an important political ally and establishes that Rudeus's usefulness extends beyond his ability to cast destructive spells. He must now operate as a negotiator and representative whose decisions affect people and organizations far beyond his family.
His subsequent assignments include helping old acquaintances and dealing with disputes that cross national and cultural boundaries. An incident involving the Sacred Beast of Doldia Village becomes another problem requiring his attention. Between missions, he continues maintaining his household and developing the resources needed for Orsted's long-term plans.
Shirone and the Conflict in Millishion
When Zanoba is summoned back to Shirone during a political crisis, Rudeus and Roxy accompany him. Rudeus suspects that the situation may be connected to another scheme by the Man-God. Their journey leads to a confrontation with Randolph Marianne, the Death God and one of the Seven Great Powers. The danger surrounding Zanoba's homeland makes clear that Rudeus cannot always protect his allies simply by removing them from a battlefield.
Later, letters from Millis draw Rudeus into the affairs of his mother's relatives. His visit to Millishion becomes entangled in conflicting family, religious, and political interests. When Zenith is kidnapped, the situation turns into an urgent search. Rudeus must navigate people with considerable influence while trying to fulfill Paul's wish that Zenith remain safe.
Geese and the Search for Powerful Allies
The discovery that Geese, a former companion of Paul's adventuring party, is an important disciple of the Man-God changes Rudeus's understanding of the approaching conflict. Geese knows much about the people surrounding him and begins gathering formidable opponents. Rudeus responds by seeking allies capable of matching fighters who would overwhelm ordinary adventurers.
His search takes him back to the Demon Continent, where he attempts to negotiate with the immortal Demon King Atofe. Her immense strength makes her a potentially valuable ally, but obtaining her cooperation is far from straightforward. Rudeus's efforts require the assistance and judgment of his companions rather than magical power alone.
Sieghart and Perugius's Trial
Rudeus's fourth child, Sieghart, is born to Sylphiette with bright-green hair associated with the feared Demon God Laplace. Because Orsted's allies anticipate Laplace's return, the resemblance creates serious concern. A familiar of the Dragon King Perugius arrives and demands that the newborn be brought to his floating fortress.
Rudeus must confront the possibility that powerful allies may view his son as a danger because of his appearance. The encounter forces him to consider how far he will go to protect his family while maintaining his commitments in the struggle against Laplace. The incident also demonstrates that the political and supernatural conflicts surrounding him can directly affect his children.
Reuniting with Ruijerd in Biheiril
Rudeus travels to the Biheiril Kingdom seeking Ruijerd's assistance against Geese. After roughly ten years apart, the former members of Dead End are finally reunited. Ruijerd's circumstances have changed, and the safety of the Superd people has become closely connected to the approaching conflict.
For Rudeus, the reunion brings a companion from his earliest adventures back into a struggle of much greater scale. He needs Ruijerd's experience and cooperation, but he must also take account of the community Ruijerd is trying to protect.
The Final Battle in Biheiril Kingdom
The conflict escalates when communication tablets and teleportation circles across the world stop functioning. Rudeus and his allies gather near the Superd village as a powerful force advances against them. Among their opponents are North God Kalman III, former Sword God Gal Farion, and Ogre God Marta. The battle forces Rudeus to rely on coordinated action, specialized equipment, and the abilities of companions whose strengths differ greatly from his own.
Geese's final preparations bring Badigadi into the conflict wearing the legendary Fighting God Armor associated with Laplace. Badigadi's extraordinary regenerative ability makes the confrontation especially dangerous. Rudeus and his allies commit their considerable resources to overcoming the enemy force. Their eventual victory ends the immediate campaign mounted against Rudeus and Orsted.
The result does not mean Rudeus has personally killed the Man-God or brought the world's greater struggle to an end. Orsted's long-term conflict continues beyond the battle, but Rudeus has helped preserve his family and build alliances that may matter in the future. The fight closes the central military confrontation of Rudeus's story without requiring every larger historical conflict to be resolved during his lifetime.
The Years After the War
After the showdown in Biheiril Kingdom, Rudeus returns to a life that is no longer dominated by immediate threats from Geese's forces. The published Redundant Reincarnation stories continue exploring his family, friends, and companions through additional adventures and domestic events. These include Norn's wedding, Lucy's first day at school, and attempts to find suitable marriage partners for Dohga and Isolde.
Other stories follow visits to Millishion, encounters involving important figures from the earlier adventures, and magical projects pursued with familiar companions. The change in circumstances gives Rudeus opportunities to spend time with people whose lives had often been interrupted by political struggles and dangerous expeditions.
Rudeus eventually becomes the father of six children. Sylphiette gives birth to Lucy and Sieghart; Roxy is the mother of Lara and Lily; and Eris is the mother of Arus and Christina. His children's different personalities and ambitions increasingly require attention as they grow older. The family difficulties described in later stories do not disappear simply because their father has survived extraordinary battles.
The third published volume of Redundant Reincarnation features a particularly serious family crisis when Rudeus's son Arus elopes. The story presents events from both the son's and father's perspectives, confronting Rudeus with a problem in which parental authority, anger, and the choices of his children become more important than his magical abilities.
Rudeus's Final Years and Death
Rudeus eventually grows old after decades spent raising a family, supporting his friends, and assisting Orsted's preparations. His life includes achievements he could scarcely have imagined during his previous existence, as well as mistakes and losses that no magical power can erase. Eris dies before him, while his remaining family continues to be an important part of his later years.
Rudeus dies peacefully of old age at 74. His death is not a final sacrifice in battle against the Man-God but the end of a long human life. His final encounter with the Man-God emphasizes that their wider conflict will outlast him, yet Rudeus no longer views his second existence as something he has wasted. The story concludes his personal journey while leaving the future of the world and his descendants beyond his own lifetime.
Additional story facts
Rudeus creates a figurine modeled after Roxy, and his craftsmanship helps establish his connection with Zanoba Shirone, who becomes deeply interested in making figures.
Their shared interest in craftsmanship develops into a lasting association that eventually contributes to practical magical research and equipment.
After Rudeus loses his left hand in the Teleportation Labyrinth, he uses a magical prosthesis. Orsted later restores his natural hand and heals a separate arm injury sustained in their battle.
The sequence distinguishes two injuries and explains why the prosthetic hand is important for part of Rudeus's life without remaining a permanent physical loss.
The postwar Redundant Reincarnation stories include the creation and subsequent loss of an autonomous figure modeled on Nanahoshi.
The project continues a technical interest shared by Rudeus and his companions, showing how their research can occupy them after the central military conflict.
The officially published reference guide A Journey of Two Lifetimes includes a chronology of Rudeus Greyrat's life alongside additional stories, artwork, and an interview.
It provides a separate official reference for readers interested in the sequence of events and supplementary material beyond the main 26-volume narrative.
