Nelliel Tu Odelschwanckネリエル・トゥ・オーデルシュヴァンク
Arrancar from Hueco Mundo; a compassionate ally encountered during Ichigo’s journey
Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck is a green-haired Arrancar from Tite Kubo’s Bleach whose story is closely tied to Ichigo Kurosaki’s journey through Hueco Mundo. Her skull-shaped Hollow-mask remnant, bright pink facial markings, and unusual gentleness distinguish her from the ruthless fighters encountered around Las Noches. She is linked to the eccentric travelers Pesche and Dondochakka, and her concern for others proves more important to her than boasting about victory.
The background behind those bonds, and the changes in her life, unfold in the manga’s later revelations.
Biography
An Unexpected Friend on Ichigo’s Journey
Ichigo’s mission to rescue Orihime Inoue takes him deep into Hueco Mundo, where unexpected Arrancar encounters complicate his understanding of who is truly an enemy. Nelliel’s story is connected to the strange traveling companions he meets in that desert, and a bond forms through his willingness to protect someone vulnerable. The full significance of her history is a major reveal of this arc rather than part of its opening premise.
Playfulness Without a Taste for Cruelty
Nelliel is remarkably reluctant to hurt anyone without cause. Licensed character material emphasizes that she dislikes battle for its own sake, and that outlook puts her at odds with Arrancar who enjoy aggression. Her sympathy for endangered companions has weight precisely because she lives in a setting where violence is often presented as the shortest answer.
Pesche, Dondochakka, and Bawabawa
Pesche and Dondochakka are part of the eccentric group associated with Nelliel in Hueco Mundo. Their noisy habits and absurd games give the desert journey some of its comedy. Bawabawa, a huge eel-like Hollow, can carry the group across the sand. What first appears to be ridiculous traveling-company chaos also masks deep concern for one another.
Personality and Motivations
Nelliel has little admiration for fighting that serves no purpose beyond feeding a warrior’s pride. She distinguishes protecting someone from tormenting a defeated enemy, a difference that puts her at odds with the more violent Arrancar. Her restraint is a conviction, not an inability to act when somebody is threatened.
There is a playful and emotionally open side to her story as well as the more deliberate refusal to glorify violence. Her connections to Pesche, Dondochakka, and Ichigo bring affection and noisy comedy into moments of genuine danger. Her warmth matters because it does not disappear when protecting someone becomes difficult.
Appearance
Nelliel is recognizable by her green hair, prominent pink markings across her cheeks and the bridge of her nose, and a white skull-shaped remnant of a Hollow mask above her face. Her look varies substantially across story scenes and official adaptations, but those features identify her without revealing the significance of her different appearances.

Abilities
Cero Doble
Cero Doble is a counterattack in which Nelliel absorbs an opponent’s Cero and fires the energy back at them. Its exact effectiveness depends on the circumstances of the encounter.
Limitations: It counters an incoming Cero rather than arbitrary attacks; its use can be physically taxing.
Arrancar combat ability
Nelliel possesses the spiritual strength and defensive skill associated with Arrancar combat. The full extent of her capabilities and her techniques is revealed later in the story.

Friend and ally
Ichigo meets her in Hueco Mundo and chooses to protect her despite the danger; his trust matters to their friendship.

Dondochakka Birstanne
Longtime companion
Dondochakka is part of Nelliel’s close-knit Hueco Mundo traveling group and is deeply concerned for her welfare.
Interesting facts
Bawabawa, the enormous Hollow that carries Nel’s traveling party, can be kept inside Dondochakka when he is not out with the group.
It explains how an apparently small and ridiculous traveling party can suddenly produce a giant desert mount without treating him as a new or unrelated creature.

Major story spoilers below.
The Third Espada and Her Principles
Nelliel was once the Tres Espada, ranked third among Sōsuke Aizen’s elite Arrancar. She opposed Nnoitra Gilga’s obsession with killing and challenged the idea that strength should be measured by gratuitous violence. Although she repeatedly defeated him in earlier clashes, she did not consider an already-defeated opponent someone to execute. This difference in values fed Nnoitra’s resentment.
Nnoitra and Szayelaporro’s Betrayal
Nnoitra and Szayelaporro Granz exploited Nelliel’s concern for her Fracción, Pesche Guatiche and Dondochakka Birstanne. After those two were injured and Nelliel was distracted by a deceptive projection, Nnoitra struck her from behind and cracked her Hollow mask. The damage caused her to regress into the childlike Nel Tu and lose her memories. The defeated group was cast out of Las Noches. Pesche and Dondochakka subsequently protected Nel and sustained her happier life with games rather than expose her to memories of the violence she had endured.
The child Nel Tu who later befriends Ichigo is Nelliel herself. Her shrunken body has short green hair, enormous eyes, a cracked skull-mask remnant, and a loose green outfit. Without memories of her former life, she plays elaborate games with Pesche and Dondochakka and becomes attached to Ichigo without knowing the history behind her injuries.
Ichigo, Orihime, and the Return of Nelliel
When Ichigo is outmatched by Nnoitra during the Hueco Mundo rescue, Nel’s distress triggers her return to her adult identity. She recognizes her past and protects Ichigo, revealing the former Espada marked with the number three. Her transformation is a disclosure of a history that Ichigo had not known when he befriended the child Nel.
Her restored appearance is that of a tall woman with long green hair, a more sharply horned Hollow-mask remnant, and the same conspicuous pink marking across her face. Her clothes after the transformation are the torn remains of Nel’s green outfit; flashbacks also depict her in white Arrancar attire.
Cero Doble, Gamuza, and a Short-Lived Advantage
Back in her adult body, Nelliel turns Nnoitra’s Cero against him with Cero Doble, strengthening the reflected blast with her own Cero; as child Nel, she could return a blast but did not combine it with her own power in this way. She then releases her Zanpakutō, Gamuza, becoming a centaur-like fighter and using the lance attack Lanzador Verde. Her regained adult form does not last. She abruptly regresses to child form during the encounter, leaving her and Ichigo in danger until Kenpachi Zaraki intervenes.
The Quincy Invasion of Hueco Mundo
During the Thousand-Year Blood War, child Nel Tu and Pesche come to Ichigo in the World of the Living, asking for help after Quincy forces invade Hueco Mundo. Tier Halibel has also been captured. Later, Nelliel returns in her adult body; an armband created by Kisuke Urahara lets her switch at will between her adult and child forms, rather than relying on the unpredictable recovery seen during the Arrancar conflict.
The Battle Against Askin and the Rescue
Later in the Quincy war, Nelliel waits outside the dangerous zone created by Askin Nakk Le Vaar while Kisuke Urahara and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez face him. She is positioned to retrieve them and other allies when Askin’s lethal Gift Ball Deluxe intensifies. Their precise escape remains off-panel in the original manga; later material confirms the group’s survival.
After the War: Hueco Mundo and Halibel
The licensed postwar Can’t Fear Your Own World tie-in places Nelliel back in Hueco Mundo after she brings the injured Tier Halibel home. She enjoys life alongside her friends, helps Halibel maintain peace in the realm, and is a calming influence on Grimmjow’s aggression. These later circumstances belong to the postwar supplemental continuity, not the original early Hueco Mundo encounters.
Additional story facts
In child form, Nel’s Cero Doble redirects an enemy’s Cero; in adult form she also blends in her own Cero, increasing the counterattack’s force.
The distinction clarifies why a familiar technique is much more formidable after her transformation instead of presenting it as an entirely unrelated new ability.
The official Thousand-Year Blood War character registry lists adult Nelliel (176 cm tall) and child Nel Tu separately, with different Japanese voice actors.
The separate casting and adult-only height entry reflect two portrayals of the same character, not two distinct identities or timelines.
Bleach: Brave Souls labels its special Nelliel form created for the Can’t Fear Your Own World collaboration as an original game design.
That notice prevents a game-only power-up from being misrepresented as a transformation Nelliel demonstrably uses in the manga or prose novels.
Spoiler questions
Was Nelliel really the Third Espada?
Yes. Nelliel formerly held the rank of Tres Espada, number three, before she was expelled from Las Noches. Tier Halibel occupies that numbered rank in the later Espada lineup.
How did Nelliel become Nel Tu?
After Nnoitra attacked her from behind during a scheme involving Szayelaporro, her mask was damaged and she reverted to a childlike state with lost memories.
Who are Pesche and Dondochakka really?
They were Nelliel’s Fracción. After her injury, they protected her while posing as harmless traveling companions and keeping her past from her.
What is Nelliel’s Resurrección?
Her Resurrección is Gamuza, a centaur-like released form in which she fights with a lance and can launch it using Lanzador Verde.
Why does Nelliel revert back to a child during the Nnoitra fight?
The adult restoration is unstable after the original injury. After using substantial power, she suddenly returns to her child form and can no longer continue the battle.
Can Nelliel control her adult form later?
Yes. In the Thousand-Year Blood War, an armband developed by Kisuke Urahara allows her to switch intentionally between her adult body and her childlike Nel Tu form.
What happens to Nelliel after the war?
Licensed postwar Can’t Fear Your Own World tie-in material places her back in Hueco Mundo after bringing the injured Halibel home. She lives among her companions, helps Halibel preserve peace, and acts as a calming presence around Grimmjow.
Is the special Beyond Resurrección Nelliel form manga canon?
No. Bleach: Brave Souls explicitly identifies that special Can’t Fear Your Own World collaboration form as an original game design; the inspected sources do not establish it as a transformation she uses in the manga or novels.
