Scaramouche

The Sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers

Scaramouche is an antagonist in Genshin Impact, introduced as a mysterious traveler from Inazuma before his position as the Sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers comes to light. Known by the codename the Balladeer, he combines a courteous facade with cutting contempt, a flair for intimidation, and an interest in secrets most people would rather leave untouched. His encounter with strange meteorites and his role in the Fatui’s operations place him directly in the Traveler’s path.

Biography

A stranger beneath the falling stars

Scaramouche enters the Traveler’s story during the limited-time Unreconciled Stars event, when mysterious meteorites are causing people to fall into dangerous dreams. He initially presents himself as an Inazuman vagrant, concealing his Fatui position. Mona detects the threat behind his polite manner and removes the party from danger before he can act.

His investigation of the fallen stars leaves him questioning the nature of the sky itself. The unsettling conclusion gives this brief early appearance a significance far beyond a routine encounter with a suspicious stranger.

The Balladeer’s place in the Fatui

Under the title the Balladeer, Scaramouche holds the sixth seat among the Fatui Harbingers. He acts with the confidence of someone accustomed to being feared, and his behavior toward the Traveler quickly makes it clear that he is neither an ordinary wanderer nor a dependable ally.

In Inazuma, he becomes entangled with a clandestine Fatui operation involving Delusions and the conflict surrounding the Vision Hunt Decree. His meeting with the Traveler at the Delusion Factory shows a willingness to exploit an opponent’s anger rather than fight on equal terms. The consequences of that encounter lead into later, more revealing chapters of his story.

Personality and Motivations

Scaramouche can be outwardly composed and almost courteous when a disguise serves him; that surface quickly gives way to sharp sarcasm, arrogance, and open disdain when he sees no reason to pretend. He sizes people up relentlessly and enjoys the advantage gained by knowing more than they do.

His hostility is not merely theatrical. His choices show suspicion of other people’s intentions, an intense aversion to being manipulated, and a fierce desire to decide his own worth. These traits make his exchanges with both adversaries and apparent allies unusually volatile. The deeper origins of that outlook are part of his later story.

Appearance

In his Balladeer appearance, Scaramouche has a youthful face, short dark-indigo hair cut in a neat bob with straight bangs, and purple eyes. His most recognizable accessory is an enormous circular hat with an ornate crown, a red underside, and long hanging ornaments.

He wears a layered, dark Inazuman-inspired outfit with red, purple, pale, and gold details. The hat, veiled fabric, and elaborate chest ornaments give his silhouette a distinctive shape.

The alternate presentation helps permanent Inazuma quest scenes remain comprehensible for players who missed the event.

Some of Scaramouche’s background is presented through the Pale Flame artifact-set lore rather than only through spoken story scenes.

Major story spoilers below.

Created by Ei, left without a name

Long before becoming a Harbinger, Scaramouche was a prototype puppet created by Raiden Ei while she was developing a vessel capable of holding a Gnosis. He shed tears in his sleep, and Ei decided not to use him for that purpose. Rather than destroy him, she sealed his powers and left him to sleep in Shakkei Pavilion with a golden feather marking his origins. Ei intended to grant him a life of his own; he later understood her decision as the first of three betrayals.

Kabukimono and the people of Tatarasuna

Katsuragi found the nameless puppet at Shakkei Pavilion and brought him to Tatarasuna, concealing where he had discovered him. Known as the Kabukimono, the puppet learned to read, cook, forge, and live among the local workers. Niwa Hisahide, an armory officer of the Mikage Furnace, treated him as a person rather than an object. For a time, their community offered him something resembling a family.

That life collapsed during a crisis at the Mikage Furnace. A supposed engineer from Fontaine named Escher had introduced changes that led to dangerous contamination. Sent to seek help from the Shogunate, the puppet met Yae Miko, who promised assistance; in despair, he returned to Tatarasuna believing his plea had been ignored, even though she had dispatched help. He then entered the corrupted furnace carrying a device supplied by Escher, unaware of what it contained.

The truth behind the second betrayal

Escher was Il Dottore in disguise. He engineered the crisis, murdered Niwa, and placed Niwa’s heart inside the device that protected the puppet from the furnace’s contamination. Dottore then falsely told him that Niwa had fled and that the heart belonged to an innocent person Niwa had sacrificed. The lie turned a friend’s attempt to save Tatarasuna into what the puppet believed was proof of betrayal.

After leaving Tatarasuna, he befriended an ill child who later died. He regarded the loss as another betrayal, even though the child could not control it. Together with his belief that Ei had cast him aside, these events became the three perceived betrayals that shaped his hatred and mistrust. He took the name Kunikuzushi before eventually entering the Fatui.

Kunikuzushi and the Raiden Gokaden

Pierro recruited the wandering puppet into the Fatui. Dottore unsealed and strengthened his body, which repeatedly suffered damage during dangerous reconnaissance missions in the Abyss. The puppet’s work eventually earned him the sixth Harbinger seat, under the codename the Balladeer.

As Kunikuzushi, he pursued vengeance against the Raiden Gokaden, the swordsmithing traditions associated with Inazuma. He sabotaged a blade-making diagram, forcing the Isshin smiths into apparent failure and exile. When Kaedehara Yoshinori and the Kamisato Clan head confronted him, he defeated their group but spared them after learning that Yoshinori descended from the Niwa family. His actions still helped bring the Isshin Art and the Kaedehara Clan into decline.

The Electro Gnosis and an artificial god

At the Delusion Factory, Yae Miko exchanged the Electro Gnosis for the Traveler’s safety. With it in hand, Scaramouche left the Fatui operation behind. In Sumeru, Dottore and collaborating Akademiya sages turned him into the centerpiece of a plan to create a new god, constructing the massive mechanical Shouki no Kami as his divine vessel.

The Traveler and Nahida ultimately defeated him. Nahida removed the Gnosis that powered his divine form, and he fell unconscious. Having lost the role he pursued and been discarded by Dottore, he remained under Nahida’s supervision in Sumeru.

Irminsul cannot undo what happened

Nahida enlisted Scaramouche to investigate Irminsul. There he encountered records revealing Dottore’s manipulation at Tatarasuna and the truth of Niwa’s death. Hoping to grant those harmed by his past another chance, he entered Irminsul and removed information about his own existence. Memories and recorded accounts changed, including the apparent history of the sixth Harbinger seat, but the tragedies themselves were not undone.

The Traveler retained knowledge of the earlier sequence of events. After finding the altered, seemingly ordinary Wanderer in Sumeru, the Traveler and Nahida guided him toward a backup of his memories. He willingly accepted the guilt and pain of his former life rather than continuing without them. During the recovery he overcame a manifestation of his former divine self and obtained an Anemo Vision.

A name of his own and an uneasy new path

No single fixed new personal name is imposed on the Wanderer: the Traveler can choose one in the game. He abandons his former titles and begins a new life under Nahida’s watch, without being absolved of what he did as the Balladeer. He asks the Traveler to tell the Raiden Gokaden descendants of his involvement and accepts that they may judge him for it. He also resolves to confront Dottore.

In Sumeru, Nahida has him participate in the Interdarshan Championship as the Vahumana representative known as Hat Guy. Behind his irritated manner is a willingness to carry out her instructions, and his studies become part of a less destructive identity.

Simulanka, Durin, and the capacity to choose

In the Version 4.8 limited-time Simulanka story, the Wanderer meets the small dragon Durin in a world shaped by stories. Although its inhabitants fear the dragon as a monster, the Wanderer refuses to treat that assigned role as the whole truth about him. Their growing bond becomes important when the two encounter each other again beyond Simulanka.

The search for Dottore in Nod-Krai

During the Song of the Welkin Moon storyline, the Wanderer goes to Nod-Krai to investigate Dottore and pursue a personal reckoning. Presenting himself as a Sumeru researcher, he meets people including Varka and the Harbingers Arlecchino and Sandrone, who do not recognize him as the former Scaramouche. He later works with Albedo and Durin while investigating strange phenomena connected to the region.

To help Sandrone finish a formula central to the crisis involving Columbina, he volunteers his own Irminsul-linked core as a computational resource. Removing it puts his memories and continued functioning at serious risk, but the calculation succeeds and his core is returned. This is a deliberate act of assistance that contrasts with the contemptuous figure who first appeared under a false identity.

Dottore’s apparent defeat does not end the crisis

During the struggle in Nod-Krai, the Wanderer helps oppose Dottore’s plans, although the decisive defeat there does not come from him alone. He initially remains dissatisfied that he did not personally settle his debt. Events then carry him back toward Sumeru, where Dottore’s lingering schemes threaten Nahida and the integrity of Irminsul.

The crisis of Irminsul and the known outcome

The Luna VII Archon Quest brings the Wanderer back into a crisis centered on Dottore’s presence within Irminsul. Working with the Traveler, Nahida, and other allies, he helps confront the Doctor inside the corrupted system. Dottore reveals that he deduced the Wanderer’s erased identity during their earlier meeting in Nod-Krai, but his taunts cannot force the former Scaramouche to retreat. The Wanderer keeps Dottore occupied while the Traveler helps initiate Nahida’s plan to transfer the world’s information to Aaru.

Nahida uses the Pyro Gnosis to burn Irminsul after arranging for Aaru to take over its information-preserving role. As Dottore tries to drag the Traveler into the flames, the Wanderer frees them; Dottore is pulled down by manifestations of the Segments he had discarded. The Wanderer escapes with the Traveler and Nahida, then returns to ordinary responsibilities in Sumeru. The released story establishes his survival and the resolution of this confrontation, not an ending to Genshin Impact’s ongoing narrative.

Additional story facts

The Traveler is allowed to choose the Wanderer’s new personal name in Inversion of Genesis; there is no single mandatory player-selected name.

A profile can correctly use the stable title Wanderer without inventing a universal new name for every player’s game.

The apparently rewritten history still includes the Tatarasuna furnace disaster and the fall of the Raiden Gokaden, but attributes the events differently.

It demonstrates the difference between changing Irminsul’s records and reversing the actual consequences of past events.

The Wanderer’s intervention in Sandrone’s calculation requires temporarily surrendering the very core that sustains his memories and functions.

The scale of the risk makes this a concrete example of how far his choices have shifted since he pursued godhood.

The Wanderer’s playable-character voice-overs specify that he prefers bitter tea and dislikes sticky sweets, including dango.

These ordinary food preferences provide a small, specific counterpoint to the life-changing events emphasized in his main storyline.

The Wanderer’s later outfit retains his signature broad hat but replaces much of the Balladeer design’s red and purple palette with blue and teal.

The visual continuity helps distinguish artwork of his two identities without treating the designs as different characters.

Spoiler questions
