Nobara Kugisaki釘崎野薔薇

First-year jujutsu sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High and one of the central student trio

Nobara Kugisaki is a first-year sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High and one of the three central students in Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen. She comes to Tokyo from a close-minded rural community, eager for a life she can choose for herself. Outspoken about her tastes and unwilling to be judged by other people’s standards, she is equally serious when a mission puts someone in danger.

Her Straw Doll Technique turns a hammer, nails, and a target’s physical connection into tools for attacks that do not always require a direct hit. With Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro, she learns how costly the profession of jujutsu sorcery can become.

Biography

Leaving a Village That Felt Too Small

Nobara grows up in a village in Japan’s Tohoku region, where she resents the way neighbors scrutinize each other and mistreat outsiders. Her childhood friend Fumi remains close to her, while Saori, an older girl whose family moved there from Tokyo, offers a glimpse of a different way of life. The villagers’ hostility toward Saori and her family deepens Nobara’s determination to leave rather than accept the village’s judgment as her own.

A Ticket to Tokyo Jujutsu High

Nobara’s grandmother is a jujutsu sorcerer who teaches her the foundations of the Straw Doll Technique and recommends her for Tokyo Jujutsu High. The school offers Nobara a way to pursue the city life she wants, although she knows sorcery is dangerous. She arrives with an enthusiasm for shopping and Tokyo that is every bit as real as her confidence in a fight.

She becomes a first-year alongside Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro under Satoru Gojo. Their contrasting personalities make for frequent arguments, but the three learn to rely on each other in circumstances where arguing alone will not keep anyone safe.

The Roppongi Test

For an early assignment, Gojo sends Nobara and Yuji into an abandoned building in Roppongi. A curse takes a child hostage, confronting her with a choice between pressing her attack and protecting a civilian. Yuji’s intervention gives her the opening she needs. Her first mission with him makes clear that her fierce manner does not excuse carelessness with other people’s lives.

Refusing Someone Else’s Definition of Strength

At the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event, Nobara clashes with Momo Nishimiya over the expectations placed on female sorcerers and over Momo’s defense of Mai Zenin. Nobara refuses to let those expectations dictate whether she can be both fashionable and capable. During their match, she uses the bristles from Momo’s broom as a link for Resonance and nearly wins, but Mai interrupts with a rubber bullet that knocks Nobara out. It is a revealing display of technique and conviction, not a clean tournament victory.

Her admiration for the second-year Maki Zenin offers a sharper expression of the same principle: she values someone who chooses her own path and puts in the work, even when others dismiss her.

Personality and Motivations

Nobara has little patience for condescension, especially when someone treats femininity and strength as mutually exclusive. She likes fashion and good food without considering either a concession to anyone else’s expectations. Her argument with Momo Nishimiya at the Kyoto exchange event puts that independence into words and into action.

Her temper, sharp teasing, and quick judgments make her an abrasive companion at times. Yuji’s exuberance and Megumi’s restraint provide frequent targets, but her commitment to them is not limited to banter. She can put personal irritation aside when someone needs her help.

She is drawn to Tokyo partly because she wants distance from the people who mistreated Saori and tried to govern everyone else’s choices. That anger does not erase her affection for Fumi or Saori. In combat, the same stubbornness can make her daring, but her strongest moments depend on reading the conditions of an encounter rather than simply charging forward.

Appearance

Nobara has a short, dyed auburn-brown bob, side-swept bangs, and orange-brown eyes. Her expressions tend to be direct and emphatic, matching her refusal to hide what she thinks.

Her familiar Jujutsu High uniform consists of a dark, buttoned, high-collared jacket and matching skirt, usually worn with dark tights and brown shoes. She carries the hammer and nails required for her cursed technique. Her interest in contemporary clothes and shopping extends well beyond her school uniform.

Abilities

Straw Doll Technique

Nobara’s Straw Doll Technique uses cursed energy with a hammer, nails, and, for some attacks, a straw effigy. She can strike through nails directly or exploit a suitable physical connection to affect a target from elsewhere.

Limitations: Her different applications depend on having the relevant tools, usable positioning, or an effective physical link; she cannot treat any object as an automatic connection to any opponent.

Resonance

Resonance sends cursed energy through a straw doll or other usable proxy connected to its target, such as part of a body or a linked object. It can injure an enemy who is not directly within reach, and the connection can sometimes turn an enemy’s own attack against them.

Limitations: The required connection is not freely available against every opponent, and effectiveness depends on the target and the link.

Hairpin

Hairpin detonates cursed energy from nails that Nobara has driven into a target or the surrounding environment. She can use their placement and the timing of the detonation to force an opening rather than relying only on a straightforward nail strike.

Limitations: She must first place or land her nails; the move is not a limitless, target-free explosion.

Battlefield Coordination

Nobara adapts her technique to allies with different strengths, particularly Yuji’s close-range fighting. Her successful teamwork depends on recognizing when a linked attack or an embedded nail can create the opening another sorcerer needs.

Limitations: Her tactics still depend on combat conditions and coordination; this is not an independent supernatural power.

Relationships

Yuji Itadori

Classmate, teammate, and friend

A fellow first-year whose irrepressible energy often annoys her. They tease each other constantly, but their collaboration against dangerous curses depends on real trust and a willingness to protect one another.

Megumi Fushiguro

Classmate, teammate, and friend

A reserved first-year who frequently counters her impulsive comments with dry skepticism. Their different approaches become useful when the three classmates have to solve problems together.

Satoru Gojo

Teacher

The powerful jujutsu sorcerer who supervises Nobara and her classmates during their early education and assignments.

Maki Zenin

Respected senior student

The accomplished second-year student who earns Nobara’s respect through her skill and determination rather than a prestigious reputation.

Fumi

Childhood friend

One of the few people from her village to whom Nobara remains personally attached. They share memories of Saori and the years before Nobara left.

Saori

Older childhood friend and admired acquaintance

An older girl from Tokyo who was kind to Nobara during childhood. The village’s treatment of Saori and her family contributes to Nobara’s rejection of its prejudices.

Interesting facts

Character-profile material lists lightly pickled vegetables (asazuke) among Nobara’s disliked foods and dry skin as a source of stress.

The official profile records dry skin as an everyday annoyance alongside a surprisingly specific food dislike, showing the ordinary concerns she carries into sorcerer life.

Her stated favorite foods include watermelon and fashionable, trendy dishes.

The combination of a simple summer fruit and fashionable foods neatly captures how she enjoys both familiar pleasures and the new city she sought out.

Her reported ideal historical figure is Oda Nobunaga.

This comes from her published character-profile preferences; it should not be confused with an actual romantic relationship in the story.

Supplementary character material associates Nobara with Sunny Day Service’s ‘Seishun Kyousoukyoku’ and Natsuko Nisshoku’s ‘Ano Depaato’ (あのデパート).

These are character theme-song selections in supplementary material, not songs Nobara performs within the story.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Nobara Kugisaki?

Nobara is a first-year student and Grade 3 jujutsu sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High in Jujutsu Kaisen. She is known for her Straw Doll Technique and direct, fiercely independent personality.

Why does Nobara move to Tokyo?

She wants to escape her village’s closed-minded atmosphere and experience city life while training at Tokyo Jujutsu High.

What is Nobara’s cursed technique?

Her Straw Doll Technique uses cursed energy, nails, a hammer, and sometimes a linked effigy to strike curses. Its notable applications are Resonance and Hairpin.

What is Resonance in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Resonance transmits a cursed attack to a target through a suitable physical connection, such as a body fragment or part of an object linked to that opponent. It is powerful when Nobara can obtain the necessary link, not an unrestricted attack on anyone she chooses.

Who are Nobara’s closest classmates?

Her main first-year companions are Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro.

Is Nobara in love with Yuji Itadori?

No romantic relationship between Nobara and Yuji is established in the main Jujutsu Kaisen manga. They are classmates and close teammates whose friendship includes plenty of teasing.

Who taught Nobara jujutsu?

Her grandmother, a jujutsu sorcerer, taught her the foundations of her technique.

Who voices Nobara in Japanese?

Asami Seto portrays her in the Japanese anime adaptation.

Major story spoilers below.

A Hard-Won Victory at Yasohachi Bridge

During the mission connected to Yasohachi Bridge, Nobara and Yuji confront Eso and Kechizu, incarnated Death Painting brothers whose Decay technique spreads through their blood. When their blood infects her, Nobara deliberately drives a nail into herself and uses Resonance to inflict pain on both brothers through the connection. The maneuver helps Yuji attack while they are distracted. Both students also land Black Flash, and Nobara finishes Kechizu by detonating a nail with Hairpin. Afterward, the two recognize that the brothers possessed human bodies; the victory is not as uncomplicated as destroying an ordinary curse.

The Mahito Encounter in Shibuya

During the Shibuya Incident, Nobara encounters the curse user Haruta Shigemo while helping Akari Nitta. She struggles against him until Kento Nanami intervenes. Although Nanami tells her that the situation has become too dangerous for her grade, she eventually returns to the conflict.

Nobara then fights a double of Mahito. Resonance lets her damage the real curse through that double, making the technique a threat to an opponent who can otherwise evade ordinary bodily harm. When Mahito switches places with his double, his real body touches her face with Idle Transfiguration, causing a catastrophic injury to her left eye and face. She collapses before Yuji, leaving him devastated. The narrative does not immediately establish that she has died.

A Long Period of Uncertainty

Arata Nitta administers emergency treatment after the attack but cannot promise that Nobara will survive. Subsequent conversations fail to settle her condition for readers, and she is absent throughout the Culling Game and most of the final battle. Her absence is a prolonged uncertainty in the manga, not definitive proof that she died in Shibuya.

Resonance Against Sukuna

In chapter 267, Nobara is revealed to be alive, having only recently regained consciousness. She wears a patch over the left eye injured in Shibuya. While Yuji battles Sukuna, Nobara strikes Sukuna’s remaining finger with Resonance from a separate location. The finger links her technique to Sukuna despite his physical distance, disrupting his attempted domain expansion and helping Yuji seize the opening that leads to victory. Her return matters because it builds directly on the technique she has used since her introduction.

The First-Year Trio Reunites

Nobara rejoins Yuji and Megumi after Sukuna’s defeat. A letter left for her by Gojo reveals that he found the whereabouts of her estranged mother; she reacts with obvious displeasure. In chapter 271, the reunited first-years investigate a curse user targeting ordinary people and work together to stop him. The final numbered chapter leaves Nobara alive, back at work with her friends, without inventing a distant future for the trio.

The Additional Volume 30 Epilogue

The additional epilogue published in the final collected volume follows up on Gojo’s letter. Nobara visits her mother but does not seek a tender reconciliation. She confronts her for failing to raise her properly, explains that she came partly out of respect for Gojo’s wishes, and reveals that she has brought her grandmother, to her mother’s alarm. The scene ends the family thread on Nobara’s own uncompromising terms, rather than suggesting the two have become close.

Additional story facts

Nobara’s survival is definitively shown in chapter 267, long after her apparent fatal injury in Shibuya.

The later reveal resolves an intentionally extended uncertainty; treating her Shibuya collapse as a confirmed permanent death misstates the completed manga.

The bonus epilogue about Nobara appears in the final collected volume, after the numbered final chapter.

A summary that ends at chapter 271 misses the series’ additional resolution of her family conflict.

How does Nobara help defeat Sukuna?

What happens to Nobara at the end?
