Shalltear Bloodfallenシャルティア・ブラッドフォールン

True Vampire and Floor Guardian of Nazarick’s first three floors

Shalltear Bloodfallen is a True Vampire and Floor Guardian of the Great Tomb of Nazarick in Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord. Created by the guild member Peroroncino, she is responsible for the tomb’s first three floors. Her petite, aristocratic appearance is deceptive: the vampire is regarded as Nazarick’s strongest Floor Guardian in one-on-one combat.

She is ruthless toward enemies, openly infatuated with Ainz Ooal Gown, and quick to quarrel with her fellow guardians—especially Aura. Behind her ornate manners lies a fighter eager to prove her worth to the master she reveres.

Biography

A Guardian Made for Nazarick

Shalltear was created in the game YGGDRASIL as a non-player character by Peroroncino, one of the guild members whom Nazarick’s inhabitants revere as the Supreme Beings. She was assigned to defend the Great Tomb’s first, second, and third floors. The floors resemble burial chambers and are populated by many undead, an environment well suited to their vampire guardian. After Nazarick enters another world, Shalltear remains subject to Momonga, the guild’s leader, who takes the name Ainz Ooal Gown.

Life Under Ainz’s Rule

In the new world, Shalltear regards Ainz’s orders as sacred and treats the other Supreme Beings with reverence. She relishes fighting and is merciless to opponents she considers beneath her. Her conduct is also anything but uniformly solemn: she lavishes affection on Ainz, competes with Albedo for his attention, and exchanges barbs with Aura. Her loyalty and her appetite for violence are both central to her early role.

A Proud but Dangerous Defender

Shalltear is unusual among Nazarick’s guardians in being assigned three entire floors and in specializing so heavily in single combat. She combines weapons, divine magic, and vampiric powers, making her formidable against one well-equipped foe. Yet the same bloodlust that strengthens her can erode her self-control. Her elaborate courtly appearance and her capacity for sudden brutality are not competing identities: they are equally recognizable parts of Shalltear.

Personality and Motivations

Shalltear is proud, theatrical, and openly sadistic. She delights in an opponent’s fear and rarely mistakes her own genteel manners for an obligation to show mercy. Her confidence is rooted in real combat power, but her taste for battle can become recklessness—especially when Blood Frenzy overwhelms her restraint.

Her devotion to Ainz is intense and unmistakably romantic on her side. She strives for his approval, clashes with Albedo over his attention, and bristles at Aura’s teasing. Around outsiders she can be imperious or cruel; before Ainz, the same guardian becomes eager to obey and almost painfully concerned with his opinion.

Appearance

Shalltear appears petite and youthful, with very pale skin, long pale hair, and red eyes. Her signature clothing is a voluminous, ruffled dress in deep purple and red, crowned by a large striped bow. The elaborate Gothic silhouette makes her look like an aristocratic doll, in sharp contrast to her predatory nature.

When prepared for serious combat, she can wear armor and wield a massive lance instead of relying on her frilled dress. Both presentations belong to the same character: courtly spectacle outside a fight, armor and lethal precision within one.

Abilities

Vampiric Strength and Endurance

Her undead nature and combat-focused build provide formidable close-quarters power and resilience.

Limitations: Sufficiently powerful attacks and suitable counters can still harm or defeat her.

Spuit Lance

Shalltear can fight with a distinctive lance that restores her health when it deals damage, allowing her to maintain pressure during prolonged encounters.

Limitations: The healing occurs when the weapon deals damage; a missed or ineffective strike provides no such recovery.

Divine Magic and Combat Skills

Her build combines physical combat with spellcasting and specialized skills, giving her options beyond a straightforward melee duel.

Limitations: Spells consume a limited reserve of magic, and her combat skills cannot be used without regard to their conditions or resources.

Vampiric Summons

She can call upon vampire-associated familiars and other undead creatures to assist her.

Limitations: These summons are not equivalent to Shalltear herself in fighting power.

Blood Frenzy

When blood covers her during combat, Blood Frenzy increases her fighting power as her craving to kill grows stronger.

Limitations: As it intensifies, she can lose restraint and attack indiscriminately, potentially failing to carry out orders.

Relationships

Ainz Ooal Gown

Ruler, master, and object of her one-sided romantic devotion

Shalltear is fiercely loyal to Ainz and openly adores him. Her feelings should not be confused with a confirmed mutual romantic relationship.

Peroroncino

Creator

Peroroncino designed Shalltear as a Nazarick NPC; she treats him as one of the revered Supreme Beings.

Albedo

Fellow guardian and romantic rival

Both serve Nazarick, but Shalltear and Albedo compete for Ainz’s attention. Their antagonism is personal rather than disloyalty to the tomb.

Aura Bella Fiora

Fellow Floor Guardian and frequent sparring partner in arguments

Shalltear regularly trades sharp remarks with Aura, though both remain on Nazarick’s side.

Interesting facts

Shalltear and Aura were created by two players who were siblings: Peroroncino and his elder sister Bukubukuchagama.

Their frequent squabbles have an added layer of context: the creators of these two guardians were siblings, a relationship reflected in their established banter.

The third published Overlord volume is subtitled The Bloody Valkyrie, a title associated with Shalltear.

The title singles out the vampire guardian’s central early conflict, rather than merely naming another place or faction in the series.

Major story spoilers below.

The World Item Incident

While operating outside Nazarick, Shalltear encounters fighters including Brain Unglaus and then comes into conflict with the Slane Theocracy’s Black Scripture. A World Item is used to place her under mind control. Her apparent turn against Nazarick is therefore not a choice to betray Ainz; an outside force has compromised the guardian. The incident leaves Nazarick facing the extraordinary danger posed by one of its own defenders.

The Bloody Valkyrie Duel

Ainz chooses to confront Shalltear personally. Her physical strength, magic, self-restoring lance, and summoned support make her an exceptionally difficult opponent, particularly in a straightforward duel. He counters her abilities with preparation, careful resource management, and powerful equipment. His victory ends with Shalltear’s death, a desperate solution to a danger that could not be ignored.

Ainz then resurrects Shalltear using Nazarick’s resources. Once the mind control is gone, she has no clear recollection of the decisive confrontation. Learning that she fought her master leaves her deeply ashamed despite having acted against her will. The humiliation stays with her and shapes her desire to serve Ainz more competently.

A Second Chance in the Dwarven Kingdom

Later, Ainz takes Shalltear and Aura to the Dwarven Kingdom while seeking lost rune technology. He places Shalltear under Aura’s supervision and gives her opportunities to exercise greater care in carrying out orders. Shalltear captures Quagoa intruders and takes part in the confrontation with their much larger army. For her, the expedition is a chance to demonstrate that she can be relied upon after her earlier disgrace.

The campaign is also a mass killing, not a harmless demonstration of strength. Shalltear and Aura deliver Nazarick’s ultimatum to the Quagoa and enforce the terms by slaughtering most of the assembled force, while a designated minority is permitted to survive under Nazarick’s control. Shalltear’s obedience and developing discipline do not make the outcome merciful.

The Truth Behind Her Enslavement

Near the end of volume 16, Ainz obtains information from a captured member of the Slane Theocracy’s forces and confirms the Theocracy’s responsibility for the World Item incident that controlled Shalltear. His fury prompts preparations for war against that state. This is a later revelation about the cause of her earlier ordeal, not a conclusion to Shalltear’s own storyline.

Her Last Verified Position in the Published Story

Through the published light-novel story’s sixteenth volume, Shalltear remains a guardian of Nazarick and no final personal outcome for her is established. The announced conflict with the Slane Theocracy is not itself a completed resolution, nor is there a confirmed permanent death or consummated romance for Shalltear.

Additional story facts

In the duel against Ainz, Shalltear survives his instant-death attack by consuming a resurrection item she was carrying.

Ainz must account for this protection before he can end the fight; the item makes her harder to defeat than raw strength alone would suggest.

Shalltear is revived after her duel by spending 500 million in-game gold from Nazarick’s treasury.

The price gives Nazarick’s seemingly extraordinary resurrection capability a concrete material cost.

Spoiler questions

Did Shalltear willingly betray Ainz?

No. Her hostile behavior arose from mind control inflicted by an outside party using a World Item, rather than a deliberate decision to betray Nazarick.

Does Shalltear die in Overlord?

Ainz kills her during their confrontation, then revives her using Nazarick’s resources. That death is not her confirmed permanent fate.

Who was behind Shalltear’s mind control?

The Slane Theocracy’s Black Scripture was responsible. Ainz learns the connection definitively much later, by the end of published novel volume 16.

What happens during Shalltear’s mission to the Dwarven Kingdom?

She travels with Ainz and Aura and helps enforce Nazarick’s demands against the Quagoa, resulting in mass deaths and the submission of survivors.

Has Shalltear’s story ended in the light novels?

No final outcome for Shalltear has been established in the first 16 published volumes referenced here. The remaining main-story outcome should not be invented.
